I cleared my throat, carefully sitting her up on the edge of the bed and stepping back, putting distance between us before I did something stupid. "You sleep on the bed," I said, my voice rougher than I intended. I turned my head, looking away, focusing on the fireplace, the walls, anything but the way her eyes were searching my face. But when I glanced back, I saw it. The sadness. The shadow of something dark and painful lingering in her gaze. My chest tightened. "Are you okay?" "Fine," she said quickly, too quickly.
