Lin Wanwan's Phone Call

823 Words
When Ruan woke up, she was lying on a large bed, the soft quilt wrapped around her body. She looked at the unfamiliar furnishings around her and wanted to move, but the pain in her wrist made her involuntarily hiss. A cold voice from Gu Yuming came, "Aren't you afraid of pain when you die? Are you afraid now?" Wen Ruan looked up at him; he stood against the light, his handsome face hidden in the darkness, making his expression unclear, but Wen Ruan could still sense that he was angry. Wen Ruan lowered her head, looking at the wrist wrapped in pure white gauze, and murmured, "Why did you save me?" "Save?" Gu Yuming walked into the light with his hands in his pockets, revealing a face full of anger, "Wen Ruan, I just don't want you to die so easily." Wen Ruan bit her lip, using all her strength to squeeze out a few syllables from her throat, "I'm sorry." Gu Yuming did not speak to her, but lit a cigarette and pulled open the curtain. Wen Ruan tilted her head, outside the myriad of lights from countless homes, tired like the stars, burning with their own smoke and carrying their own worries Gu Yuming could clearly see the person on the bed through the reflection of the mirror. After several years apart, she no longer had the youthful, dewy complexion I remembered; life had worn her once delicate skin to a pale hue, and the lines of worry between her brows had deepened into faint creases. But she is still beautiful. Even stunningly beautiful. Just too thin. When I held her just now, it felt as if those bones could pierce through that layer of skin and hurt him. Thinking of this, Gu Yuming gritted his teeth fiercely, deeply hating himself for still caring about her. He fiercely pinched the cigarette, walked to the bedside, and when Wen Ruan was caught off guard, he jabbed the burning tip of the cigarette at her snow-white shoulder. Wen Ruan cried out in pain. Gu Yuming, however, looked at the scene where the cigarette butt scorched the skin and sparked, and smiled faintly. Wen Ruan dodged, covering the searing wound with her relatively intact hand, a tear falling with a plop. Gu Yuming remained unmoved, simply gripping the cigarette butt tightly in his hand, raising a satisfied smile, "In the past, when you were hurt even a little, I would be anxious beyond measure, but now seeing you like this, I actually feel particularly pleased." Wen Ruan was choked with pain from his words, unable to say a single word, only striving to sink her frail body into the bed. Gu Yuming suddenly grabbed her hair, "Speak up!" Wen Ruan was both scared and sad, only knowing to cry, "You're right, Gu Yuming, we can't go back." Gu Yuming only felt something collide with his heart, he released Wen Ruan, and the corners of his mouth lifted in a mocking arc, "In this lifetime, I never want to go back to the past." He stood up, looking down at Wen Ruan, "But don't think you can just wipe the slate clean like that, Wen Ruan, our accounts are not settled yet." After he finished speaking, he left in a hurry, leaving Wen Ruan alone in the room, crying, until she was exhausted to the point of falling into a deep sleep. The next day, Wen Ruan was awakened by the phone. Wen Ruan groggily answered the phone. A clear and youthful voice came from the other end, "Sister Wen Ruan, are you back?" The speech had a slight pause, and the drowsy Wen Ruan did not notice, merely responding with a murmur as she began to wake up. On the other end, there was a moment of silence before she smiled and said, "So, Sister Wen Ruan, where are you living now? Lin Wanwan hasn't seen Sister Wen Ruan for a long time." The two characters Lin Wanwan finally woke Wen Ruan up. Wen Ruan sat up in a panic, looking at the soft swaying light on the curtain, the white expanse of the bedroom, and the few cigarette butts in the ashtray by the bed, all of which constantly reminded Wen Ruan: Gu Yuming had once existed. She seemed as nervous as a mistress meeting the legitimate wife, "I just got back and haven't found a place to stay yet. I'll let you know once I do." Another long silence, just as Wen Ruan was about to gasp for breath, that end chuckled, "Then it's settled. When Wen Ruan finds a place to live, you must notify Lin Wanwan at the first opportunity." Wen Ruan repeatedly said okay, quickly hung up the phone under the pretense of going to work, but a strong sense of sarcasm surged in her heart. Once upon a time, Wen Ruan would not care about Lin Wanwan.
