Silas opened the door and stepped inside. He did it quickly, like taking off a Band-Aid. Whatever was in this train car, he was going to have to deal with it one way or another. It was best to have an element of surprise. It was worse than he had feared. It was a little girl. She sat alone in the train car. The other seats were deserted, though not by choice. The bright red smears on the twisted metal frames and threadbare cloth told him all he needed to know. Silas charged forward, hoping to catch the little thing by surprise. But he had already hesitated; maybe living on earth so long had made him soft. She easily dodged aside as he tried to kick her in the face. Now behind him, she giggled.
