Louise DelaneyThe next morning, Louise pushed herself up from the sofa and winced as she reached for her crutches. Abby had left early to open the bookstore. It had been a while since Louise had been in to work, and had it not been for Abby, she didn’t know how she would have managed.
She slowly made her way to the kitchen. It was the first time in her life that she’d ever been in crutches, and she had no idea it would be so difficult to carry her own weight around. She’d taken to sleeping in the living room to save herself the taxing hike up to her bedroom.
Louise looked around the kitchen and tried to recall why she’d gotten up. Her eyes darted around the room—from the fridge to the stove, the dining table to the kitchen counter. What was it I wanted? she thought.
