Sarah GardnerSarah followed Kate and Louise into the backyard. She could see that Helen was talking to Abby. Poor girl, she thought, knowing that Abby wasn’t a big talker. Sarah set the cookies in the center of the table next to where Kate had put the cheesecake. “These lovely cookies were made by Abby,” she said, casting a glance at the teenager. “And the cheesecake was made by Philip.”
“Is all this for me?” Helen beamed. “How nice of you all to go out of your way for me.”
Sarah was relieved by Helen’s softened vibe. A bit of thanks and gratitude goes a long way. “Well,” she began, “you are our best friend’s mother, and we wanted you to know how happy we all are to have you with us.”
