Elena's Pov
“I don’t trust him.”
Izzy’s voice was low but sharp as she hovered near the suite door. I didn’t need to look at her to know she was watching Dante like a hawk. And honestly… I didn’t trust him either, not fully. Not yet.
I glanced at the monitors beside his bed. His breathing was steady now, but every rise and fall of his chest reminded me of the man who had once shattered my life. The man who had used me, then left me to rebuild alone. And now he was here, in my city, in my hospital, under my care.
“He’s awake,” I said softly. “And I’m keeping him alive. That’s all that matters right now.”
Izzy’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Keeping him alive isn’t the same as keeping him safe, from himself or from you.”
I shook my head. “No one can protect him from the choices he made years ago. I’ve done everything I could to protect myself and Aiden. That’s what matters.”
Her eyes softened slightly, but she didn’t argue further. She knew I had lived with that pain long enough to understand its consequences.
I left Dante’s room to check on the recovery team and review his charts. Even in the quiet hallways of the private wing, the tension followed me like a shadow. Every step I took reminded me of the life I had left behind, and the life I had built for Aiden and myself.
I paused outside the staff room and took a deep breath. Years of practice, years of surviving life-and-death situations, had taught me how to stay calm. But nothing had prepared me for this—Dante Blackthorne lying in my hospital, alive, breathing, and a constant reminder of the past I had fought so hard to escape.
I pressed my palm against the cold wall, willing myself to focus. I had work to do. Patients to save. But my mind refused to follow orders.
Hours later, I stepped into the cafeteria, craving a quiet cup of coffee and a moment to think. I was alone for now, or at least I thought I was.
“You really can’t stay away, can you?”
I froze mid-step and turned. It was Lucian. His sharp eyes studied me like he was reading every hidden thought. He had always been a presence in Dante’s world, a man loyal to the family, but with a mind of his own. And now, he had appeared, uninvited, in my sanctuary.
“Lucian,” I said carefully, keeping my voice neutral. “What are you doing here?”
He smirked faintly. “Checking on the patient… and the doctor. You always seem to show up when Dante’s involved.”
I stiffened. “I’m here because of my patient. That’s all.”
His gaze didn’t waver. “Sure. You and I both know there’s more to this.”
I sipped my coffee, keeping my expression calm. “And if there is, it’s none of your business.”
Lucian leaned against the counter, studying me with an unsettling intensity. “You’ve changed,” he said finally. “Stronger. Smarter. And yet… still the same Elena Vale who vanished from the Blackthorne world without a trace.”
The words stung, though I refused to show it. “I survived,” I said simply. “That’s all that matters.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Do you think he deserves that chance?” His gaze flicked to Dante’s room at the end of the hall. “The man who left you to rot?”
I set my coffee down and met his gaze evenly. “He’s alive. He’s my patient. That’s enough for now. The rest… we’ll deal with later.”
Lucian studied me for a long moment before nodding slightly. “Don’t underestimate him. Or the people around him.”
I felt a shiver crawl up my spine. Lucian didn’t need to say more. I knew exactly who he meant, Marcus. Cassandra. The entire Blackthorne world. Dangerous, meticulous, and unforgiving.
***************
Back in Dante’s room, I checked his vitals again. He was sleeping now, though fitfully, and I adjusted his IV before pulling up the latest scans. My phone buzzed quietly in my pocket.
Aiden.
My chest tightened. Just seeing his name on the screen reminded me why I had survived. Why I had fought. Why I had built a life strong enough to protect him.
I stepped into a small lounge outside the ICU and dialed his number. “Hey, baby,” I said softly when he answered. “How was school today?”
There was a pause on the other end. Then: “Mom… I had a weird dream.”
I frowned, concern pricking at me. “Tell me about it.”
“I dreamed… about a man I didn’t know. But he looked like Dad. And he said he knew me… and then I woke up.”
My heart lurched. I had tried to shield Aiden from everything, especially the past that belonged to Dante. But it seemed fate had its own plans.
I forced a calm tone. “Dreams aren’t always real, sweetheart. Nothing to worry about.”
He hesitated. “But… it felt real. Really real.”
I swallowed hard, keeping my voice even. “I know, baby. I know.”
After hanging up, I leaned back against the wall and closed my eyes. Fate wasn’t done with us. Not with Dante. Not with Aiden. And certainly not with me.
Later that evening, Dante woke again. I was there, as expected, monitoring his recovery.
He looked at me with that same unreadable expression, though his voice was quieter now. “Elena… why did you come back into my life?”
I took a breath. “I didn’t come back for you,” I said. “I came back because I had to… because your life was in danger. And because the past… doesn’t stay buried. Not in your world. Not in mine.”
He leaned back against the pillows, his eyes dark and heavy with emotion. “You’ve changed,” he said quietly. “You’re not the same girl who ran away.”
I shrugged slightly, trying to keep my tone light. “I had to change. For me, for Aiden… for survival.”
There was silence for a moment. Then he asked something I hadn’t expected. “And do you… forgive me?”
I froze. Forgive him? That was something I wasn’t ready to even think about. I didn’t trust him. I didn’t know if I could trust him. And yet, part of me wanted to believe in him, the man I had loved, feared, and lost.
“I don’t know,” I said finally, my voice barely above a whisper. “Not yet.”
He nodded slowly, like he understood more than I realized. But then his gaze sharpened. “Elena… there’s more coming. I can feel it. And this time, it’s not just about me or the family. It’s about… everything.”
I felt a chill run down my spine. He was right. Marcus’s influence, the Blackthorne world, Aiden’s safety… all of it was intertwined. And no matter how far I ran, I could never fully escape it.
That night, after Dante had fallen asleep again, I returned to my apartment. I stared out the window at the city lights below, my thoughts restless and unquiet.
Izzy’s warning echoed in my mind: You don’t know who sent this. You’ve spent years hiding… and now you’re talking about flying across the country for some anonymous VIP.
I realized she was right. I didn’t know. I couldn’t know. And yet, I had gone. And now Dante was awake. And Marcus would soon know I was here.
I sat down at my desk and pulled up the encrypted files I had maintained for years, documents, medical records, and carefully hidden evidence of everything that had happened back then. I needed to prepare. To protect myself, to protect Aiden… and maybe, just maybe, to prepare for a confrontation with Dante that I hadn’t expected.
My phone buzzed again. A secure message. I opened it, my heart skipping a beat.
We know she’s alive. And so does he. – M
I dropped the phone on the desk, my hands shaking. Marcus had found out. And now, everything I had built could crumble in an instant.
I pressed my forehead against the desk, trying to steady my breathing. I had faced death countless times in the operating room, but this… this felt different. Personal. Dangerous.
And the most terrifying part? Dante.
He was awake. He was here. And he wasn’t the same man I had left behind either.
