I bit back my laughter as Jordan raced out with her tail in between her legs.
Kevin still stood smirking like he had won a prize.
He hadn’t.
The air between us went still, the lake moving quietly and the birds seeming to have stopped singing.
Kevin adjusted his sleeve like he had all the time in the world. “Cold day for a walk, don’t you think?”
“Not if you know where you’re going,” I replied. My voice was even.
He tilted his head. “Some places are worth getting lost in.”
“Some places don’t let you leave the same,” I said, eyes flicking past him to where Jordan had vanished.
That made his smirk falter.
“Not all things can be owned, you know. You lose things that you can't handle at times... Alexander,” he whispered, biting his lower lip.
