Chapter 16: Into the Abyss
The descent felt like it lasted forever. With each step, the air grew thicker, colder, as if the world itself was growing heavier. Ava could feel her heartbeat thundering in her chest, her nerves a tangled mess of fear and anticipation. Despite the eerie calm, she knew they were on the edge of something monumental.
The city below them was alive in a way that was both terrifying and awe-inspiring. The stone walls shimmered with an unearthly glow, as though the very material was infused with energy. Strange symbols, intricate and ancient, adorned the surfaces, their meanings lost to time. The sound of their footsteps echoed off the walls, and with every passing moment, the sense that they were intruders in an ancient, forgotten world grew stronger.
They finally reached the bottom, stepping onto a platform made of the same glowing stone. It was surrounded by an expanse of nothingness, a vast, empty space where nothing seemed to exist except the oppressive energy that hummed beneath their feet.
“This is… unreal,” Leo muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. His eyes scanned the surroundings, his hand resting on the hilt of his weapon. Despite the incredible sight, Ava could tell he was on edge.
Kai, ever the quiet one, was more focused. He seemed to be studying the glowing walls, his fingers brushing lightly over the symbols etched into the stone. “This isn’t just a city. This is a place of power—of knowledge. We’ve only scratched the surface.”
Ava glanced at him, her stomach twisting with unease. "What do you mean by 'a place of power'?" she asked.
Kai looked up, his face a mix of awe and calculation. "Look at the way the energy pulses here. It’s like it’s connected to everything. The city, the land, the very fabric of reality itself. Whatever this place is, it’s not just some ancient ruin—it’s alive."
Ava felt the weight of his words sink in. She had known, deep down, that they weren’t just exploring an old civilization or some hidden treasure trove. The Guardian had made it clear that the city was tied to the Legacy, but the significance of it still eluded her.
They moved cautiously forward, the platform beneath them leading to a grand staircase that descended into what seemed like a vast, underground chamber. The walls of the stairwell were lined with more symbols—symbols that seemed to shift and change as they passed by. Ava couldn’t help but feel like they were being watched, as though the very stone was alive, observing their every move.
The air grew colder as they reached the bottom of the stairs, and the chamber before them opened into a massive hall. The ceiling stretched high above them, disappearing into shadow. It was impossible to see the full extent of the space, but Ava could make out the faint outline of columns that stretched toward the sky, each one etched with the same glowing symbols. The floor was made of smooth stone, polished and untouched by time.
In the center of the room was an enormous, ancient pedestal. It was surrounded by a circle of stones, each one inscribed with more of the shifting symbols. The pedestal itself seemed to hum with power, an aura of energy radiating from it that made Ava’s skin tingle. She could feel the pull again—the same sensation she had experienced when they had first entered the city.
“Is this it?” Leo asked, his voice thick with awe.
Kai stepped forward cautiously, his eyes scanning the pedestal. “I think this is what we’ve been looking for,” he murmured.
Ava’s heart pounded. This was the heart of the Legacy. She could feel it in every fiber of her being. This was where the trials would begin—the tests that the Guardian had spoken of. The trials that would reveal the truth. But what would the truth cost them?
Before anyone could speak, the air shifted again. A low hum filled the room, vibrating through the stone floor beneath them. The symbols on the walls began to glow brighter, and the pedestal before them seemed to come to life. Ava instinctively took a step back, her heart racing in her chest.
The Guardian’s voice echoed in her mind again, filling the space with its ancient tone.
“You have reached the first trial.”
The words were simple, but the gravity behind them was undeniable. Ava felt her knees go weak, but she steadied herself. The trial was about to begin, and there was no turning back.
Suddenly, the air around them shimmered, distorting like the surface of a pond disturbed by a stone. The pedestal shifted, its surface rippling like water, and a figure emerged from the mist that surrounded it. The figure was humanoid but made of shimmering light—an ethereal being that radiated with energy.
“I am the Test of Truth,” the figure spoke, its voice soft yet commanding. “I will show you the truth, but it is not a truth you may be ready to face. You will each be tested. Only those who can confront their greatest fears will be worthy to continue.”
Ava’s breath caught in her throat. She had heard of trials like this—trials that forced you to face your darkest fears. She had been preparing herself for the unknown, but this? This was something far more personal. Would they be ready to face what was coming?
The figure’s eyes—if they could be called eyes—focused on each of them in turn. It wasn’t just looking at them. It was looking into them, seeing their very souls. Ava felt an overwhelming sense of vulnerability, like all of her hidden fears and doubts were laid bare before the being.
“Step forward,” the Test of Truth instructed. “Your trial begins now.”
Leo stepped forward first, his expression tense, but resolute. He was the first to face whatever awaited them, but Ava could see the uncertainty in his eyes. She couldn’t blame him. They had no idea what this trial would reveal.
The Test of Truth extended a hand, and a swirl of light enveloped Leo. For a moment, Ava couldn’t see him—he was lost in the light, a mere silhouette against the brilliance. Then, the light faded, and Leo collapsed to his knees, gasping for air. His face was pale, his eyes wide with shock and fear.
He looked up at Ava, his voice barely a whisper. “It was… it was me,” he stammered. “I… I failed everyone. I couldn’t protect them. I couldn’t—”
Before he could finish, the Test of Truth spoke again, its voice calm and unyielding. “Confront your failure, Leo. Face the truth of your actions, and only then will you be worthy to continue.”
Ava’s heart clenched. She knew Leo’s pain. He had always carried guilt, ever since that fateful mission where they had lost comrades in battle. He had blamed himself, thinking he could have done more. And now, it was confronting him in the most painful way possible.
Leo shook his head, fighting the tears that threatened to spill. “I didn’t do enough,” he muttered, his voice breaking. “I let them die.”
Ava took a step forward, her heart aching for him. “Leo,” she said softly, her voice firm yet compassionate. “That wasn’t your fault. You did everything you could.”
But Leo didn’t hear her. He was still lost in his memories, consumed by his guilt. The Test of Truth was showing him the harsh reality he had tried to bury for so long.
Ava turned to Kai, her eyes pleading for help. Kai’s face was grim, his jaw clenched, but he stepped forward beside Leo. He crouched down beside his friend, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Leo, look at me. You can’t carry this burden forever. You have to face it, but you can’t let it destroy you.”
For a long moment, Leo didn’t respond. But finally, he nodded, tears streaming down his face. “I can’t fix it. I can’t go back.”
“No,” Kai said firmly. “But you can move forward. We all have our pasts, but it’s the future that counts.”
The Test of Truth’s form shimmered and flickered, like a reflection in a broken mirror. It was silent for a moment, before it spoke again. “You have faced the truth, Leo. But the journey is far from over. You must continue, or you will be left behind.”
Leo stood slowly, wiping his eyes. Ava could see the weight in his expression, but there was a flicker of resolve now—he had faced the truth, even if it hurt him. He was ready to move on.
The Test of Truth nodded and turned its gaze to Kai. “Your turn.”
