Chapter 8: The Shadows Close In The air was thick with tension as the night dragged on. Ava sat by the dim fire, her gaze flicking nervously between the shadows of the surrounding jungle and the faces of her friends. They hadn’t spoken much since they’d settled by the river. Leo was asleep, his face relaxed but his breathing shallow, as if even in sleep, he could feel the weight of their situation. Kai sat a few feet away, his eyes darting over the strange symbols he’d been trying to decode on his tablet, his focus unbroken. But Ava couldn’t focus. Her mind raced, filled with thoughts of the Legacy, the creature, and the larger mysteries unfolding around them. Why was the Legacy hidden so carefully? What was it protecting? She ran her fingers through her tangled hair and tried to steady her nerves, but the questions kept circling. The sound of rustling leaves snapped her back to attention. She tensed, hand instinctively reaching for her knife at her side. The jungle around them was unnervingly silent now, the usual nighttime creatures strangely absent. A moment passed, and then another. Just the wind and the faint rush of the river. Ava slowly let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. “Everything alright?” Kai asked, his voice low as he glanced up from his tablet. Ava hesitated for a moment. “I thought I heard something,” she said, though she wasn’t sure herself. The night felt heavy, almost like the jungle itself was watching them. Kai studied her for a moment, his brows furrowing slightly. “It’s probably just the wind. But stay alert.” Ava nodded, though the nagging feeling in the pit of her stomach refused to subside. She glanced over her shoulder at Leo, who was still fast asleep, and then turned her attention back to the shadows. Something was coming. Morning came too quickly, and when it did, the atmosphere had shifted. Ava woke to the sounds of birds and rustling leaves again, but there was no mistaking the tension that lingered in the air. Leo stirred as the sun began to climb, the first light of day flickering through the trees. “We need to move,” Ava said quickly, sitting up. “Now.” Leo groaned and sat up, rubbing his eyes. “What’s going on? Is something wrong?” “I don’t know,” Ava replied, keeping her voice low. “But we’ve got to get out of here. We’re too exposed.” Kai looked up, his face serious. “She’s right. If the creature we saw last night is still out there, we can’t risk staying in one place for long.” The three of them packed quickly, the urgency in the air palpable. Ava’s hands moved quickly as she secured her gear, her eyes never leaving the trees. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was following them, something that knew their every move. After a tense breakfast—just a few bites of jerky and water from the river—they set off, following the path along the river’s edge, keeping their heads down. Ava kept to the front, her instincts guiding her through the dense jungle. The path was narrow, winding, and filled with thick vines and underbrush, but the river gave them some guidance. As they walked, Ava couldn’t shake the feeling that the jungle was closing in on them. The air was oppressive, the sounds of the jungle muffled, and the sky overhead was clouding over as if in warning. “We need to make it to higher ground,” Kai suggested after a while. “We’re exposed down here. If we can get to the top of that ridge, we’ll have a better view of everything around us.” Ava nodded in agreement. She could sense that Kai was right. The lower they were, the more at risk they were of being ambushed. She glanced back at Leo, who seemed to be struggling with the heat, sweat dripping down his face. “Leo, you good?” she asked. “Yeah,” Leo replied with a weak grin. “Just tired, that’s all. Let’s get to that ridge, though. I’m all for getting some elevation.” The climb up the ridge wasn’t easy. The jungle seemed to grow thicker the higher they went, the air heavier, as though it was pushing back against them. Ava’s muscles ached with each step, but she didn’t stop. Her thoughts kept drifting back to the Legacy, to the creature they’d seen, and the dark truth that was unfolding around them. Finally, they reached the top. The view was breathtaking. The jungle stretched out before them, an endless expanse of green. The river wound through the trees like a silver snake, cutting through the landscape. The air was cooler at the top, the oppressive weight lifting slightly as they took in the sight. For a moment, it almost felt peaceful. But Ava knew better than to let her guard down. The jungle was still alive with danger. “This is good,” Kai said, setting down his pack and pulling out his tablet. He began scanning the area, checking for any signs of the creature or its tracks. Leo, on the other hand, took a seat on a nearby rock and began catching his breath. “We can rest for a bit here. I need a break.” Ava stood a little farther away, her eyes scanning the horizon. Her heart was still racing. The silence in the jungle felt like it was closing in on them, heavy and suffocating. She couldn’t shake the feeling that they weren’t alone. “I don’t like this,” Ava said quietly to herself. “None of us do,” Leo responded from his perch. “But we have to keep going. We can’t just sit here forever.” Before Ava could answer, a shadow passed over them. It was quick, barely noticeable, but Ava’s instincts kicked into high gear. Something was in the sky. Her eyes shot to the heavens. There, circling high above the jungle, was something dark. It was too far away to make out details, but its size was unmistakable. “Get down!” Ava shouted. Before they could react, a loud screech echoed through the air, followed by the sound of wings beating through the air. The creature had returned. End of Chapter 8
