Chapter2

Elara staggered to her feet, the searing pain in her side a constant throb as she glared at Torin. His outstretched hand hung in the air, a silent offer she refused, her distrust burning hotter than her wound. The blood-red glow from the moonstones cast eerie shadows across the clearing, the split earth still trembling beneath them. Kael Draven emerged from the trees, his storm-gray eyes scanning the chaos, a grim set to his jaw. He tossed her a worn cloth, his voice rough. “Press that to your side—Selene’s magic lingers.” She caught it mid-air, wrapping it around her wound with a wince, her silver wolf instincts urging her to shift and heal. Torin’s gaze lingered on her, a mix of guilt and urgency in his dark eyes. “We need to get out of here,” he said, his tone low but firm. Elara shot him a hard look, her voice sharp. “Why should I follow you after what I saw?” The memory of him at Selene’s side gnawed at her, fueling her anger. Kael stepped between them, his rogue scent cutting through the tension. “Save it—Selene’s ritual started, and that portal means trouble.” He unrolled a map etched with lunar script, its edges glowing faintly. The ground shook again, a reminder of the danger closing in. Elara’s scar pulsed, a painful echo of the prophecy—could she be the forsaken wolf destined to save or destroy? She clenched her fists, torn between flight and fight. Torin’s voice broke her thoughts. “She forced my hand—threatened the pack with an invasion if I didn’t comply.” His words carried a raw edge, but Elara scoffed, tying the cloth tighter. “And you believed her over me?” The hurt in her chest rivaled her physical pain. Kael traced the map, his finger stopping on a mark. “The lunar magic’s unstable—we need to find her lair before it spreads.” His urgency pushed her to move, despite her doubts. They set off toward the village, Kael leading with the map as a guide, his steps quick and sure. Torin stayed close, his presence a confusing mix of protection and betrayal. Elara’s wound ached with each step, but she gritted her teeth, determined to uncover the truth. The forest thickened, the moonstones’ red glow filtering through the trees like blood. A shadow darted ahead, and Kael raised a hand. “Ambush,” he whispered, his body tensing. Enforcers burst from the undergrowth, their eyes glazed with Selene’s control, blades flashing in the dim light. Elara shifted, her silver wolf form leaping into the fray with a snarl. She tore into the nearest attacker, her fangs sinking deep, while Torin’s black wolf roared beside her, a force of nature. Kael’s magic flared, vines erupting from the ground to bind their enemies. The fight was fierce, the air filled with growls and the clang of steel. One enforcer broke free, lunging at Elara with a dagger, but Torin intercepted, taking the blow to his shoulder. He staggered, his wolf form faltering, and Elara’s heart lurched. She ripped through the attacker, her rage blinding her, until the last enforcer fell. The clearing fell silent, save for their heavy breathing. Torin shifted back, clutching his wound, his face pale. “I’m fine,” he grunted, though his voice betrayed the lie. Kael knelt beside him, inspecting the injury with a frown. “Selene’s magic in this—needs more than time to heal.” Elara’s anger softened, but she kept her distance, her trust fragile. The map glowed brighter, pointing toward a cave hidden in the forest. “Her lair’s close,” Kael said, helping Torin to his feet. Elara nodded, her mind racing. Could Torin’s story be true, or was this another trap? They moved toward the cave, the red glow intensifying with each step. Elara’s scar burned, a warning she couldn’t ignore. Torin limped beside her, his breathing labored, and she felt a pang of guilt despite herself. Kael scouted ahead, his rogue skills keeping them hidden. The cave loomed ahead, its entrance framed by moonstones, its light pulsing like a heartbeat. A chill settled over them, Selene’s presence lingering. Inside, the air was thick with magic, the walls etched with ancient runes. Kael studied them, his voice low. “This is where she channels the ritual.” Torin leaned against the wall, his wound darkening. “She said the bloodline would rise—yours, Elara.” The words hit her like a blow, her mother’s face flashing in her mind. Was Selene her mother, as the prophecy hinted? She shook the thought away, focusing on the task. A sudden crash echoed from deeper within, and shadows shifted. Elara’s wolf senses sharpened, detecting movement. “She’s here,” she whispered, shifting again. Torin followed, his black wolf weaker but determined. Kael’s magic flared, illuminating the cave, revealing Selene standing at a stone altar, her dagger raised. The blood-red portal pulsed behind her, its energy crackling. “You can’t stop destiny,” she sneered, her eyes fixed on Elara. Elara lunged, her silver wolf clashing with Selene’s enforcers that materialized from the shadows. Torin fought beside her, his movements sluggish, but his presence bolstered her. Kael’s vines lashed out, binding the attackers, but Selene’s magic countered, shattering them. The elder advanced, her dagger slashing toward Elara, who dodged narrowly. Torin intercepted, taking another hit, and collapsed with a whimper. Elara’s rage peaked, and she tackled Selene, pinning her to the ground. The dagger skittered away, but Selene’s laughter filled the cave. “You’re mine, daughter,” she hissed, vanishing in a flash of light. The portal pulsed violently, and a wave of energy knocked Elara back. She scrambled to Torin, his breathing shallow. Kael rushed over, his face grim. “We need to get him out,” he urged. They dragged Torin toward the cave entrance, the red glow following them. Elara’s scar seared, her blood responding to the magic. The ground trembled, and the portal expanded, its edges spitting dark tendrils. Selene’s voice echoed, “The bloodline awakens—your choice is near.” Elara’s eyes widened as a figure stepped from the portal, its form shrouded in shadow, and a co ld hand gripped her ankle.
