XXIILight flooded into Finn's eyes. Someone was holding his left eye open. A crackling torch was being held close to his face, the heat on his exposed eyeball alarming. Sounds came to him: an assortment of groans, the clank of metal, a babble of low voices, pleas for mercy and cries that ended abruptly. His stomach and knee hurt sharply, and his head throbbed with a heavy pain. He tried to blink through the light to see who was there. See where he was. He'd come back to Engn, hadn't he? Or maybe he'd never really left. Perhaps that was it. He was still in the mines, waking up from some impossible dream of life back in the valley. That had to be it. “Finn. Are you okay? Can you hear me?” Diane was there. That was good. Of course, she was in the mines as well. She'd been captured. Confused
