POV Mark
I couldn’t get my head around everything that went on at Amelia’s house. It was scary to think that a ghost was there and actually trying to hurt us. When her brother in law said he had tried to hurt him I was so worried about Amelia because I was terrified that something would happen to her. But I had to remind myself that when she shouted for him to Stop he had listened to her so I had to hope that he wouldn’t hurt her. I had never told anyone before but my grandmother could speak to people on the other side and when I used to go to her house when I was little I would see strange things happening. My grandmother said that the spirits didn’t actually speak to her but that they would communicate in other ways. She said that spirits only revealed themselves to people that believed in them. When I was around 19 years old I was at her house and I saw a woman standing in her hall way. The woman pointed to a picture of my father and disappeared. I told my grandmother and she said she thought I had the gift too. Two days later my dad was involved in an accident at work and he passed away. My grandmother told me that the spirits could see things in the future and that I had to open my mind and listen to them. The day of my dads funeral I was standing looking in the mirror as I brushed my teeth when I seen my dad standing behind me. I didn’t tell anyone that I had seen my dad, not even Charlie, because I didn’t want people to think I was crazy. But every now and then when I was investigating a murder case I could sense things that I couldn’t explain. The day I went to Amelias house to interview her about Dr Logan’s death I felt a presence and when the golf clubs fell over I knew that there was something there with us. When her brother in law came in the hair on the back of my neck stood on end and when I was about to leave I felt a hand on my shoulder. I had felt and seen a-lot of spirits but as we stood in Amelia’s house that day I knew someone was trying to tell me something. Thats why I wasn’t surprised when I went back there with Charlie to speak to Amelia and all hell broke lose. She wasn’t surprised either and I knew that she had probably seen situations like this a million times before and it made sense that she hadn’t been able to move on in the past because her husband was still there with her. That day we left her house and Charlie was in shock because although he had told me he believed in fate and karma he never believed in an afterlife. I had made fun of him when I found a book on past life regression in his glove compartment when I had borrowed his car and he told me it had been a gift but he had acted strange when he came home from Bali and he said he thought that him and Amelia were supposed to be together and that they were soul mates and fate had brought them together. But when we left her house that day he was so shaken up and he couldn’t deny that it had been a spirit that had caused all of this. Especially because we had both seen the ghost of Richard at Amelia’s bedroom window. Charlie dropped me at the police station and I told him I would call him later. I didn’t want things to be strange between us because he was my best friend and it wasn’t our fault that we had fell for the same girl. Later that day I collected my car from the garage and headed home. I was exhausted from work and all the s**t with Amelia so I went straight to bed. All night I dreamt about Amelia. I was dancing with her at a wedding and I felt like the luckiest guy alive. Then I could hear Charlie’s voice shouting out to me and I woke up with a fright. I looked at my phone and I had a missed call from my friend Detective Mary Burn. Although it was still early I called her back and she said that there had been a break in at a house and that the man had been strangled. “You should get over here Mark” she said and I quickly got up and went into the bathroom to have a shower. “I’m on my way Mary, so it was another strangulation? do you think there’s a connection between this and Dr Logan and Richard Ferguson deaths?” I asked and the line was silent for a moment “Mark it’s Charlie. His cleaner found him this morning. You need to get over here” I couldn’t take in what she was saying. “Is he dead?” I asked and I could hear my voice tremble. “I’m not sure, the paramedics are with him now” I ended the call and sat on the edge of the bath tub and I cried. I had spent those past few days scared that I would lose my best friend because we were both in love with the same woman and now I had really just lost him and there was nothing I could do. It took all my strength to get myself onto my feet. I got into the shower and let the water hit my face and I closed my eyes and I couldn’t help but reach out to my grandmother. She had died a few years ago and losing her was the real reason that my life had took a turn for the worse. I got out the shower and dried off and I was begging for her to come and see me. I stood in front of the large mirror above the sink and as I wiped the steam off the glass she appeared behind me. I felt her put her hand on my shoulder “is he with you? Is Charlie there?” She shook her head and smiled and I knew that he was alive and that I hadn’t lost him. “There’s a bad spirit that tried to hurt me yesterday, what do you think I should do?” She leaned forward and whispered “he’s not bad, he can’t move on because he needs to protect his wife. He’s angry and he’s getting stronger every day. Speak to him, he needs your help and you need his” I felt her touch my cheek and she faded away. My grandmother had always told me that spirits can’t speak to us unless they truly loved us so I could never verbally communicate with any of them other than my grandmother and although I was in such a bad place it felt good to know that she was still there looking after me.
