Chapter 14 The gates at the Washington Navy Yard gave me some eerie flashbacks to China Lake, resurfacing memories that left me edgy. True, I’d talked my way out of the base in the end, but the arrival had been less than pleasant. Me and Cliff, sandwiched between two silent lifters who I’d once watched blow a man up from the inside with their minds, forcing all the blood from his body in an unnatural display of telekinetic prowess. Toby and a third telekinetic, sitting up front, talking with the guards while Cliff and I had watched, helpless. Unwilling visitors to the base, but unable to say a word, because our minds, our wills had been warped. It wasn’t something I ever wanted to experience again. A life lesson, I suppose, since at least it had taught me firsthand the dangers of warping
