##### Fifth Mist #####
--------------------------------
Push the light into my darkness
And make fire out of the ashes
A spell that forces white light to appears
In form of black fire.
“I blink and suddenly the scenery changes in a flash. I'm no longer in Rukka's battlefield against the zombie troops in China, but instead in a historic night western street in London.
A girl likes to go out at night, makes her family worry just so that she can meet her lover. But karma comes faster when she's not coming home one night, gone for so long until her family spots her dead body delivered in front of their door. That stupid girl.... is me.
I thought he was perfect—handsome, has a kind and charming smile, and also wealthy—the kind of man that every girl can only dream off. I thought we were going to get married soon, until that night came. We met like we usually did on the promised spot. But something with the look on his eyes concerned me very much. I asked him if he's alright, but he only replied me with a cold and empty stare. The burning fire in his eyes almost resembled a land of fire.
Then when he started to step closer, I never felt so afraid in my life. And I used to be so free and fearless. Yet in one night, the man that I thought would be my husband scared me so much, I wanted to run away from that place at once.
The bad news is, I didn't. And that's not just the problem.
I couldn't move, so I just stand there while he suddenly lunged at me like a lion taking down its prey. I fell backwards with my head down first. It hurts, but not as painful as when he bit my neck.
I had no idea what he was doing back then, until the next night.
When I woke up, I had a massive pain in the head. But that's not all. Every inch of my body is aching in pain, like I was just being pierced by a thousand needles on the previous night. What's worse is that I even had no idea what had happened before. Not a single idea, except for the happy days when I still lived with my family.
A man came into the room I was in soon after that. He offered me some wine, which I took gratefully before he helped to send me home safely. Then I reunited with my family back, things turned out great. They weren't wrong when they said home sweet home. I didn't think I could ever feel better by going home after I discovered myself inside a stranger's house with no recalling memory of how it happened.
Except with having that numb feeling inside my heart. Something didn't feel right when I started hugging my uncles and aunties, or when I was welcomed by my brother and cousins. I felt like I was missing something that I couldn't recollect.
Things starting to get clear when a storm hit our mansion. The strong wind forced us to retreat to the family cemetery site. That place, under the pavilion, was crafted by something. They then decided to finally show me the upper part of the pavilion. I climbed up until I found not just one, but many faces, all framed by handmade ceramics. The second I saw the faces was the moment when I could finally remember what happened.
They were not my family—at least not who I thought they were. We were still blood-related, but just not the people I knew. No, they were already dead. The family members that I saw then were just features that my family had left before they died. Their descendants.
That was why they all looked so much like my family. But their deaths had happened a very long time ago. They were what were left after two hundred years had passed.
After finally remembering everything, I decided that it was time for me to leave and find a new place to stay. I bid them goodbye and moved on to my.... newly discovered eternal life.
Though while my body was hunting blood, my heart was yearning for love. Guilford. That name keeps ringing in my ears from the silent whisperers, even until now.
One night, I found a night market that was holding a big festival. There were many humans to seduce and drink from, but the best was to finally find a new home. Sharing didn't sound to mind me, until I found out who was staying next door.
It's him.
But the man I thought I knew was then just a vampire hunter that simply wanted my death. I felt so doubtful on my own memory for recognizing his appearance. I was trapped inside the prison of vampires later then, made by the hunter organization. I was tricked by him. I thought that if I approached him, he'll change back to his old self. But I was just too naïve to understand. Understand that the man I loved once would never come back to my embrace anymore. Until then the naivete of mine leaded me into this prison.
I've been trying to escape since then. The number of attempt I've put is countless. I'm kept in a special cage, designed only for a creature like me. It's wide, but not enough. I want my freedom back. And I can see my chance.
They're all too silly to think that I will never do this, but recently I've find out that my cage is actually right next to a golem monster. I have a plan since then, alright. And I'm going to straight soon.
By using the golem prisoner, I break its cage and let it cause chaos even in the safest place in the world.
"A future for a future. You took away mine, and I'm simply taking yours back." I thought I had finally met my happy ending, but as time changed, you changed.... Taintos, my eternal love. And I don't see any reason to keep anything any longer.
I let myself cry pearly tears of regret before I jump down from the window of my prison.
It's suffocating to keep resurfacing from a memory to another chronicle. But it doesn't stop right there. I'm being pulled once again to sink deeply into another cloud of mist, before images start running again as if they are mine.
In the darkness, blue lights are twinkling like the stars. The background is beeping to represent my heart. And I never felt so weak before.
Dying. I'm dying. I know that by now. The blue lights are not lights or stars. They are the glass tube that carries my blood to run. I'm in the laboratory again. My Nii-san has been trying to save me, but if this fails, that mean it's just not meant to be. And if it's not meant to be, then I'll lose my life.
A single life.
It can mean nothing. Though this one is mine. I possess only one forever. Like the fire that burns the white candle at my side, I'll end just like that. Like any other creature. Just faster. My candle will break and my fire will slake soon.
Nii-san said that if my blood turns to purple, then I will die. He's been trying the best he can to help me survive, but this one last strike might be my last.
"No!" He raises his voice when he hears me whispering this in resignation. "You won't die. I'd swear to help you, and Nii-san will not let you die. Don't give up on me. You must live!"
"But, Nii-san—" I start weakly but he cuts me soon.
"I've promised to mother that you will have a long life. That's why I enrolled the University for Creatures until I got my PhD in circulatory system specialist and trying to cure you since you were small. We'll succeed this time, trust me," he insists.
He starts writing something down on his notepad when an idea seem to just cross his mind and then turns on the machine. "Trust me in this, Fay. I'll save you," he says before pushing the last red button which turns to green later. The machine starts buzzing and everything turns so bright in no time.
When there's light, there's darkness. Once the light has reach a certain point of intensity, it will turn off and let darkness roam. When I open my eyes, all I can see is sparkles. Beautiful colors of blue and red. They are decorating the room wonderfully that I almost think that I'm already out. Until I hear that beeping sound.
I finally open my eyes fully. I notice I'm still lying on the same bed, same room. Nii-san is nowhere in sight, but it doesn't matter. The radiating gems in front of me are pulling my eyes completely on them. There's a rushing blue sea. Then the red gems are flowing inside, each have distance like they were already arranged before. It takes me seconds to finally realize that it's my blood. The thin glass tube is circulating my blood.
I gape. "It's- It's-"
"Beautiful," I can hear my brother finishing the sentence for me. After a while, he turns his gaze on me. "Fay, you're alright." He states the statement even though his eyes still hold disbelief.
I look at myself while rising from the bed quickly. I don't feel dizzy anymore. "I am." I start to break a smile. Nii-san reaches my side and does the same.
"Finally.... you're cured." He holds my hands. "Mother is going to be so happy to hear this."
"All thanks to you. Thank you, Nii-san." I hug him as he hugs along.
After the recovery, I mostly spend my day outside. I've been inside the house because of my sickness for my whole life. This is my change to finally breathe real fresh air, feel the nature's wind directly on my skin and smell flowers. I'm making a flower crown today, using white lilies and sunflowers.
"Nii-san is going to like this," I can't help but mutter to myself. I'm too happy. My mood is too good.
Just one more to go as I pick my last sunflower. I bring it close to my nose to smell the freshness, when something decides to pierce my nose. "Aw!" I grunt, rubbing the spot where it hurts the most. An insect is flying away, which I suspect is the one that just pierced me. Oh, well. A bug can't even bother me in this glorious bright day.
The sun eventually sets when I already finished my writing and delivered the crown flower. I hopped steps to Nii-san's lab with a happy smile plastered on my lips.
"What's that?" He asks, lifting his face from the notes. He has been on the lab for some time now, especially after I'm cured. He's still finding out whether my recovery is permanent or temporary. He said that he didn't want to take the chance.
"It's for you." I present the crown to him.
"Thanks, Fay," he receives gracefully even though they are flowers. That's what I like so much about my brother.
"And what's this?"
"Um, a flower crown?"
"No, I mean this." He comes closer and lifts my chin while his other thumb cares my nose. "It's definitely not a pimple. And there's a—" He backs away to grab a silver utensil without leaving my eyes. He takes the clamp up to my face and suddenly I feel something is being pulled from my nose.
"Aw!" I cry.
Nii-san examines the small magenta thorn-like between his shiny clamp. "This is a bee's sting."
"I got stung when I was in the garden," I answer while rubbing my nose.
"What? Why didn't you tell me sooner? You just recovered suddenly so you have to be carefully in taking care of your body, Fay." Even though he’s supposed to be angry like Father, Nii-san looks disappointed on me.
I sigh. "I know. I just thought that.... I'm gonna be fine. I mean, it's not that painful or other. So I just simply ignore it."
"Well, you shouldn't. I'll take care of your injury and then I'll examine this some more," he says, mentioning the bee's sting.
At the night, I feel kind of restless. I think I'm falling asleep, but somehow I believe that I'm not. Usually, when I'm dreaming, it's like watching a black and white screen. But this time, I can see the deep blue cover and my dim yellow bedside lamp. But when I see a familiar face popping from the outside of my window, all wonders instantly thrown out of the window.
"You're here!" I exclaim happily, somehow feeling rather spoiled tonight as my circle my arms around his waist.
Collin seems slightly surprised by my act, but hugs me back anyway. “I miss you,” he whispers in my ear, making me shiver and just want to hug him more.
“Don’t go,” I whisper back.
He leads me to my bed. “Never.”
Then the magic of the night’s flower happens.
