Chapter 2

Bang! He slammed the exam room door behind him. "Alina, I never married her. You don't have to humiliate me like this." He fixed me with a stare, his voice hoarse and strained. I held his gaze without flinching. "Mr. Green, your private life has nothing to do with me. If you don't even have the nerve to face your own condition, you can always book an appointment with psychiatry." "What?" Roland's face turned livid, but he swallowed his anger and gave in. He drew a deep breath and stiffly made his way to the exam bed as if he were walking to his execution. Then he lay down slowly. I stood, slipped on a pair of medical gloves, pulled the curtain shut, and moved to his side. "Take off your pants. Relax and cooperate with the examination." My voice was cool and matter-of-fact. Roland's whole body was rigid, every muscle pulled tight. He hardly seemed to breathe. I could feel how badly he was fighting the examination. "Relax!" I reminded him, my patience wearing thin. He gritted his teeth and forced himself to loosen up. As I continued the examination, Roland suddenly flinched. The next moment, I stopped. His body had already reacted on its own. Silence swallowed the room. I looked into Roland's eyes, wide with panic and humiliation. "Mr. Green." The faintest smirk tugged at my lips. "Looks like I brought you back from the dead." Roland's pupils contracted. He shot upright, hurriedly fixing his clothes before stumbling out of the room without even looking back. I slowly removed my gloves and tossed them into the medical waste bin. Then I walked over to the sink, turned on the faucet, and scrubbed my hands clean. With the water running over my fingertips, my thoughts slipped back to a year ago. It was a rainy night. I had been burning up with a high fever, lying helpless in my rented apartment without enough strength to get out of bed. I called Roland and begged him to come get me. I told him I felt like I was dying. Roland stayed silent for a long moment before saying, "Alina, Yolanda wants me to have dinner with her. She is emotionally unstable, and I'm worried she might do something. Be good and take a cab to the hospital. I'll come back after I take care of things." I found out later that he had dinner with Yolanda, went shopping with her, bought her the blind box set I had always wanted but never been willing to splurge on, and even took her to the movies. Meanwhile, on that rainy night, I dragged my feverish body to the hospital, burning at 102°F. I collapsed in the emergency room hallway. When I woke up, there was nothing beside me but a cold IV stand. I sent Roland message after message, but he never answered. It wasn't until the next morning that his text finally came through. Roland: Alina, I'm sorry. Yolanda was having a rough night, and I was worried about her. Has your fever gone down? I stared at the message and laughed. So that was my place in his heart. Yolanda's tears mattered more than my life. Later, Yolanda took my thesis and entered it in a national college academic competition. I brought the evidence to Roland and begged him to stand up for me. He tossed the evidence onto the floor and looked at me with cold impatience. "Alina, do you really have to be so petty? How many all-nighters did Yolanda pull for that competition? It's one thesis. I'll pay you for it. Can you stop making a fuss?" "Pay me?" I stared at him, hardly recognizing the man in front of me. "Roland, that was my work. You stole it and handed it to her!" "Stole it?" He let out a scornful laugh. "Alina, you wrote it, so what? Does that mean nobody else can? Stop making yourself out to be the victim. Yolanda worked harder than you ever did." I pulled myself back to the present, shut off the faucet, and dried my hands. A soft knock came at the door. Nurse Harper poked her head in. "Dr. Bellamy, Mr. Green's test results are back. There is no physical problem. It's psychological." I nodded. "Got it." "Dr. Bellamy." Harper hesitated, then lowered her voice. "Mr. Green just punched the wall in the hallway." I sneered, "Did anyone call security? Make sure he pays for the damage." 'Punch the wall? He should take a good look at his own rotten heart first!'
