Chapter 3

After work, I headed to the parking lot and found a familiar figure waiting by my car. Before I could reach her, Yolanda's shrill voice pierced the air, grating like nails dragged across a chalkboard. "Roland, what the hell are you doing? A men's clinic? You came here behind my back?" Roland's voice was low and tightly controlled, anger simmering beneath every word. "Yolanda, go home! Stop embarrassing yourself here!" "I'm embarrassing myself? If I hadn't shown up, who knows how long you would've kept embarrassing yourself here!" Yolanda's voice shot up, dripping with vicious mockery. "For a whole year, I wondered why you wouldn't touch me. Now I know what the problem was! You came to her? You went to Alina? What, you wanted her to see you like this..." Before she could finish, Roland spotted me and headed straight over. "Get in," he ordered, "I'll drive you home." I gave him a cool look. "Mr. Green, being my patient doesn't make me your passenger." Yolanda hurried after him and jabbed a finger toward my face. "Alina, drop the innocent act! You're doing this to get back at Roland, aren't you? You deliberately made him lose face, didn't you? Don't push me. I can have the Green Group blacklist this hospital!" "Ms. Scott, choose your words carefully. This is a hospital. Keep harassing me, and I'll have security remove you. I also follow the Green Group's stock. If Mr. Green's condition sends the share price tumbling, that would be a much bigger headache." "Seriously?" Yolanda was so furious she could barely get the word out. "Yolanda, enough!" Roland finally lost his temper. He spun around and seized her wrist, gripping it hard enough to make her stumble. "Roland, you're hurting me." "Get out of here!" Roland shoved her away. Yolanda froze, clutching her swollen wrist as she glared at me with pure venom. Then she hurried off in her heels. I watched her go and almost laughed. Back then, I had looked far more pathetic than she did now. That night, Yolanda had attended the Green family dinner. She deliberately smashed the antique vase passed down through generations of the Green family, then burst into tears and claimed I had pushed her. She cried and begged for forgiveness. Roland stormed in, didn't ask me a single question, and immediately took her word for it. He dragged me out of the mansion, dumped me in the pouring rain, and made me stand outside all night as punishment. He said I wasn't worthy of being the Green family's daughter-in-law. He called me vicious and jealous. He warned me that if I ever set foot in Green Manor again, he would break my legs. That night, I stood outside until I was soaked through. I slipped and fell more than once, the pain so bad that I could barely get back up. I begged him. I told him I never touched Yolanda, but he wouldn't even look at me. When I finally passed out in the storm, he was busy peeling shrimp for Yolanda. After I was taken to the hospital, he even accused me of faking my illness for sympathy and pretending to faint to dodge my punishment. Roland suddenly caught my hand, yanking me out of the memory. "Alina, stop this. I need to talk to you. About us." "I'm making a scene? Right. Somehow, I was always the one making a scene. "I ate the pastries Yolanda gave me, ended up with a perforated intestine, and was rolling around in agony in the ER while begging you to come sign the surgical consent. You told me to stop making a fuss, said I could bear the pain, and told me not to delay taking Yolanda to the airport. "I spent years putting everything I had into my PhD research, and you turned around, bought the patent, and gave it to Yolanda. I begged you to return it. Without it, I would've had to delay graduation by a year. "You told me to stop making a fuss. You said Yolanda liked it, so you gave it to her. She didn't even know what it was for. "When my father was lying in the ICU fighting for his life, and we were desperate for money, you were out shopping with Yolanda. I held a knife to my neck and begged you for a loan. You told me to stop making a fuss. You said that money was reserved for investing in Yolanda's new project, and you couldn't spare a cent." I pulled my hand away. "Roland, there's nothing left between us except the doctor-patient relationship on my medical records." "Let me explain." Roland gripped my shoulders with both hands. "Yolanda had just miscarried, and she was emotionally unstable. I was only trying to comfort her. Besides, we'd been drinking. I wasn't thinking clearly. Then she lost the baby, so I had to make it up to her somehow. I always cared about you..." I shoved his hands away and opened my car door. "Then I wish you both a long life together. May you grow old together and never have children!" "Oh, one more thing." I paused before closing the door. "You can't even perform with her now. So what makes you think you could back then?" Roland stiffened, disbelief written all over his face.
