Alex held Etan’s hand tight as they walked toward the storage shed at the edge of the old football field. Months of rain and weather, harvest and replanting had long since washed away the footprints, and the blood. All of the plants out there had young, early summer vigor rather than the near slumber of October.
Yet he knew he’d always be able to spot exactly where he’d nearly lost his life.
Two of the red hound dogs ranged ahead of them, noses to the ground, but without the urgency they’d shown that terrible day. Their warning may have led Alex to that encounter with a knife in his belly, but they’d prevented what could only have been far worse if one of the students walked in there instead.
