Etan closed his eyes, his heart nearly bursting inside of him. He hadn’t seen this moment coming, not the way their daughter surely had, but he knew this was why the dread was so awful.
This was what he couldn’t stop.
Their little girl knowing so many people were going to die, knowing her fathers weren’t going to be able to do anything about it. Facing the news of such a terrible loss would be nothing compared to facing Caela right now.
“No, sweetheart, it’s going to be okay,” he whispered, Alex nodding beside him.
“Don’t lie to me!”
Her sobbing gasp was loud enough for everyone on their side of the room to look around. Protocol and pretense didn’t matter anymore, and neither did people considering Caela to be an adult before she was ready.
