Chapter 10: Lines In The Sand.

The morning sun filtered through the blinds, casting long shadows across the small apartment. Laura had barely slept, her mind racing with the new information they had uncovered. Lucian Desmond’s influence was more pervasive than she had imagined, and the photograph of him with her grandfather haunted her thoughts. There was no escaping the truth: Desmond was behind everything. Ethan, always the early riser, was already up, sipping coffee as he reviewed their plan for the day. Tom, on the other hand, was still glued to his laptop, running through the data with fresh eyes after a few hours of sleep. The tension in the room was palpable, the weight of their mission pressing down on all of them. Laura joined Ethan at the small kitchen table, her face reflecting the same determination she had felt the night before. “So, what’s our next move?” Ethan set his coffee down, his expression serious. “We need to dig deeper into Desmond’s real estate deals. If we can find the financial records that show he forced your grandfather out, it could be the smoking gun we need. But we can’t do it alone.” Tom looked up from his laptop, nodding in agreement. “I’ve been thinking the same thing. We’re going to need allies—people who can help us dig up the dirt on Desmond without drawing too much attention.” Laura frowned. “Who do you have in mind?” “There’s a journalist I know,” Tom said, his voice thoughtful. “He’s been chasing stories on corporate corruption for years. If we give him what we have, he might be able to dig up even more. Plus, his sources might have access to information we can’t get.” Ethan considered this for a moment. “It’s a risk. If Desmond finds out we’re working with the media, he could move quickly to bury everything.” “It’s a risk worth taking,” Laura interjected, her voice firm. “We need to bring this out into the open. The more eyes on Desmond, the harder it’ll be for him to cover his tracks.” Ethan met her gaze, seeing the resolve in her eyes. “Alright. Let’s get in touch with this journalist. But we need to be careful—Desmond’s not just a businessman; he’s got connections in law enforcement, maybe even the government. If he senses we’re getting too close, he’ll come down on us hard.” Tom nodded and began typing again, drafting an encrypted message to his contact. “I’ll set up a meeting for tonight. Somewhere public, where Desmond’s people won’t try anything.” As Tom worked, Ethan pulled out a map of the city, spreading it across the table. “In the meantime, we should look into the properties Desmond’s been buying. If we can figure out what his endgame is, we might be able to cut him off before he can make his next move.” Laura leaned over the map, tracing the areas where her grandfather’s properties had once been. “This is where he wanted to build affordable housing, right? Desmond’s plan is the exact opposite—luxury developments that’ll push out the people who need it most.” Ethan nodded. “Desmond’s all about profit. If he can turn this area into the next hot real estate market, he’ll make billions. But he’s not doing it alone—there’s no way he could pull off something this big without help.” Tom chimed in, his eyes still on the screen. “That’s why we need to expose his allies. If we can show that they’re all in on this, the whole thing could unravel.” Laura’s thoughts drifted back to the photograph of Desmond and her grandfather. She couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to their relationship than just business. “Do you think my grandfather knew what Desmond was planning? Why would he meet with him if he knew Desmond was trying to take his land?” Ethan frowned, his brow furrowing. “It’s possible your grandfather didn’t realize the full extent of Desmond’s plans. Or maybe Desmond made him an offer he couldn’t refuse—something that seemed like a good deal on the surface, but was a trap.” Laura’s heart ached at the thought. Her grandfather had been a shrewd businessman, but he had always put people first. He would never have willingly sold out his community for profit. “I need to know why he met with Desmond. There has to be something we’re missing.” Tom glanced up, his expression thoughtful. “If we can find records of that meeting—emails, phone calls, anything—it might give us the answers we need. But Desmond’s not stupid. He would’ve covered his tracks.” Laura sighed, the frustration building inside her. “It feels like we’re chasing ghosts. Every time we get close to the truth, it slips through our fingers.” Ethan placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “We’re making progress, Laura. Desmond’s on the defensive now, which means we’re getting under his skin. We just need to keep pushing.” Tom sent the encrypted message, then turned back to them. “I’ve set up the meeting for tonight. In the meantime, I’ll keep digging. There has to be something in these files that we can use.” Ethan nodded, rolling up the map. “Good. We’ll meet with the journalist and see what he can uncover. But we need to stay vigilant—Desmond’s going to be watching every move we make.” Laura looked at the two men, her resolve hardening. They were in this together, and she wasn’t about to back down. Desmond had taken too much from her family already. It was time to take the fight to him. --- That evening, they made their way to a small, dimly lit café in a busy part of the city. The place was filled with people, the hum of conversation providing a comfortable cover for their meeting. Tom’s contact was already there, sitting in a corner booth with a cup of coffee in front of him. The journalist, a middle-aged man with graying hair and a weathered face, looked up as they approached. He had the air of someone who had seen it all and wasn’t easily rattled. “Tom,” the journalist greeted him, shaking his hand. “It’s been a while.” “Good to see you, Jack,” Tom replied, introducing Laura and Ethan. “Thanks for meeting us on short notice.” Jack nodded, his eyes sharp as he studied them. “Tom said you had something big. Something about Lucian Desmond?” Laura felt a twinge of anxiety as they sat down, but she pushed it aside. This was their best chance to expose Desmond, and she couldn’t afford to hesitate. “We have information that ties Desmond to illegal real estate deals, bribery, and potentially even murder,” Ethan said, getting straight to the point. “We need your help to bring it to light.” Jack leaned back in his seat, his expression unreadable. “Desmond’s a dangerous man. I’ve chased stories on him before, but nothing ever stuck. He’s got friends in high places who make sure of that.” Laura took a deep breath. “We know. But this time, we have evidence—documents, emails, and a connection to my grandfather’s death. Desmond’s been trying to take over land that belonged to my family, and we believe he had my grandfather killed when he refused to sell.” Jack’s eyes narrowed, and for a moment, Laura thought he might turn them away. But then he nodded slowly. “If what you’re saying is true, this could be the story of the decade. But you need to be sure you have everything. Desmond’s lawyers will come after you with everything they’ve got.” Tom slid a flash drive across the table. “This is what we’ve got so far. It’s not everything, but it’s enough to start. We need you to dig deeper, find out who’s backing Desmond, and expose them.” Jack picked up the flash drive, turning it over in his hand. “I’ll see what I can do. But I’m warning you—once this goes public, there’s no turning back. Desmond won’t just sit back and let us destroy him. He’ll come after all of us.” Ethan nodded. “We know the risks. But this needs to come out. People need to know who they’re dealing with.” Jack pocketed the flash drive, his expression serious. “Alright. I’ll start looking into it tonight. But you’d better be ready for what’s coming. Desmond won’t go down without a fight.” As they left the café, Laura couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that settled in her stomach. They had taken a huge step by involving Jack, but it also meant that the stakes were higher than ever. Desmond would soon realize that his secrets were no longer safe, and when he did, the real battle would begin. But there was no going back now. Laura was ready to face whatever came next. She had to be—because this was about more than just the inheritance. It was about justice, and making sure that Lucian Desmond could never hurt anyone else the way he had hurt her family. As they walked back to the car, Ethan spoke up, his voice low and steady. “We’ll keep an eye on Jack, make sure Desmond doesn’t try anything. In the meantime, we need to find more evidence—anything that ties Desmond directly to your grandfather’s death.” Laura nodded, her resolve hardening. “We’ll find it. We have to.” As they drove away, the city lights fading into the distance, Laura knew they were crossing a line. There was no telling what Desmond would do when he found out what they were planning, but she was ready. She had to see this through, no matter the cost. The truth was too important, and justice for her grandfather was worth the risk.
