The first Ally

The warehouse smelled of rust and salt, mixed with something faintly metallic—like blood and electricity. Seraphine stepped inside, every nerve alive, her hands still glowing faintly with golden light. The hooded figure moved silently ahead, and she followed, eyes scanning the shadows. Crates and broken machinery lined the walls, but beyond the clutter, a soft hum of energy reached her ears—different from her own pulse. “Who… who else is here?” she asked, voice trembling. He stopped. Slowly, he pulled back his hood. For the first time, she saw his face: sharp features, silver eyes that seemed to see through her soul, and a calm aura that made her chest tighten. “This is Kael,” the hooded figure said. “He’s the first of the others you need to find.” Kael stepped forward, his gaze locking on Seraphine. The golden pulse in her chest reacted instinctively—warm, electric, alive. She could feel his energy, like fire threading through her veins. “You’re… Seraphim,” he said softly, almost a whisper. “I felt you awake. I’ve been waiting.” Seraphine swallowed. “I don’t even understand what that means. I just… I just got powers, and they’re…” She gestured to her glowing hands, unsure of the right words. “…dangerous.” Kael smiled faintly, the kind of smile that made her uneasy. “Yes. And you’re not the only one. The government… they’ve been hunting us all our lives. They’ll come for you, and for me. And we need to move.” A sudden crash outside the warehouse jolted them. Seraphine’s glow flared instinctively, and Kael’s eyes went wide. “They’re here.” The door splintered under impact. Armed men poured in, shouting orders. The golden light surged from Seraphine, coiling outward like a living shield. Kael raised his hands, silver energy radiating from him, weaving through the golden strands, forming a protective barrier around them. Seraphine’s heart raced. We can fight together… The men charged, but as soon as one reached the barrier, he screamed—a high, metallic wail as invisible forces slammed into him, tossing him back like a ragdoll. “Stay close to me!” Kael shouted. “Focus your pulse! Feel it!” She gritted her teeth and concentrated, letting the golden energy flow through her entirely. Every thought, every emotion, every heartbeat became a weapon. The attackers stumbled, frozen, as if reality itself resisted them. But then one man pulled out a strange device—a small black sphere that crackled with electricity. He threw it at the floor. The warehouse shuddered violently. Sparks flew. The barrier flickered. Seraphine gasped. It’s disrupting me! She clenched her fists, forcing the pulse to surge outward. Light erupted, blinding everyone in the room. When her vision cleared, the men were gone—or at least incapacitated, sprawled across the floor. The device had shattered, smoke curling from it. Kael exhaled heavily. “They’re getting more advanced. They’ll keep coming.” Seraphine’s chest heaved. “Who… who are they? Why us?” Kael’s eyes hardened. “Because we’re the next step. Project: Seraphim. You were created to survive this world… and to change it. But they don’t want us to succeed.” Her pulse slowed, golden threads dimming. The enormity of it hit her. Created? Survive? Change the world? She shook her head. “I don’t know if I can—” “You can,” Kael interrupted, stepping closer. “And you will. But first, we need to leave. Others are waking. Others are being hunted. If we stay here, we die—and they take them all.” A distant roar of engines reminded her they weren’t safe. Not for a second. Seraphine clenched her fists, feeling the golden energy hum beneath her skin. The pulse reacted, alive, ready. She swallowed, nodding. “Okay,” she said, voice firm. “Then let’s find the others.” Kael smiled faintly, the first real hope in weeks flickering in her chest. “Good. Because the hunt… it’s only beginning.” Outside, the city burned. Inside, two of the awakened had met. And somewhere, across Australia, the other five were stirring, unaware of what—or who—was coming for them. The city streets had turned into a war zone. Smoke curled from overturned cars, and the wail of distant sirens was constant. Seraphine’s pulse flared as she sprinted beside Kael, the golden glow tracing every movement of her limbs. “Keep up!” Kael shouted, weaving through alleys, silver energy crackling from his hands. “They’ve blocked the main roads!” Seraphine barely registered his words. All she could feel was the heat of power inside her, alive, thrumming, demanding release. Every shadow seemed to stretch toward them, every reflection in broken glass flashing like eyes. “Over here!” Kael ducked into a narrow side street. Seraphine followed, heart hammering, breath ragged. A drone hovered above the main road, scanning, its lens glowing red. “They’re tracking us,” she muttered. Kael didn’t answer. Instead, he extended his hand. A silver pulse shot out, striking a nearby dumpster. The metal bent and twisted, forming a barrier across the street. The drone’s sensors sparked and short-circuited. Seraphine’s glow flared instinctively, golden threads intertwining with his silver energy. We’re stronger together… The moment was fleeting. Engines roared, and black SUVs skidded into the alley. Armed men jumped out, weapons raised, moving fast. Seraphine felt a surge of fear—but also clarity. She thrust her hands forward. Light exploded outward, hurling the attackers back. Kael’s energy followed, forming a wall around them. Sparks and molten energy danced like fireflies in the night. But the attackers weren’t done. One of them held a strange device—another black sphere, humming with electricity. It hovered in the air, scanning. Seraphine felt it pressing against her mind, a cold, invasive weight. Kael cursed. “It’s psychic! Focus!” Seraphine clenched her teeth and concentrated. She let the golden pulse flow freely, letting it meld with Kael’s silver energy. Together, they created a field of light, strong enough to repel the sphere, shattering it into fragments of blackened metal. The attackers hesitated, eyes wide. That’s when Seraphine saw movement behind them. Another figure—a girl, maybe seventeen, maybe eighteen—was standing on a rooftop, glowing faintly, her hair whipping in the wind. Her eyes locked on Seraphine. Another one… The girl raised a hand. Light arced from her fingers like liquid fire, hitting one of the SUVs. Tires burst. Metal bent. The car flipped. Seraphine gasped. Kael’s eyes met hers. “That’s the second one. Her name is Elara. She’s strong, but she’s new at this.” The girl—Elara—shouted something. Seraphine didn’t hear it over the chaos. But instinctively, Seraphine answered, letting the golden pulse surge in a bridge of light toward her. A spark of recognition passed between them. We’re connected. The attackers faltered, unsure which direction to strike. Seraphine’s pulse flared brighter. She felt the power of three awakened converging for the first time. But then, from the shadows, a new presence emerged. Taller, darker, radiating authority and menace. Seraphine felt it like a cold hand on her spine. Her chest tightened. Not them… something else. The figure stepped forward, a whisper of gold trailing behind him. He didn’t speak, but she heard the words in her head: “Do you understand yet what you are, Seraphim? You are mine to awaken—or to destroy.” Seraphine’s pulse surged uncontrollably. The street trembled. Kael’s voice cut through the roar: “Run! We’ll meet him again, but not today!” Seraphine grabbed Kael’s arm. They leapt over a barricade together. The golden and silver light fused, leaving a trail of brilliance in their wake. Elara followed, her own flames joining the ribbon of power behind them. As they disappeared into the city’s labyrinth of alleys, Seraphine’s chest burned with a single, terrifying thought: They know us. They’re always watching. And this… this is only the beginning. Somewhere out there, the rest of the awakened were stirring. Somewhere out there, the true enemy was waiting. And Seraphine realized, with a thrill that was half fear, half exhilaration: If they want the Seraphim… they’ll have to chase all of us.
