CHAPTER 2 THE MATE BOND

1109 Words
The great hall of the packhouse had never looked so alive. Silver lanterns hung from the ceiling beams, casting a soft glow that made the wooden walls shimmer like polished amber. The long tables had been pushed aside, leaving a wide circular space in the center of the room. Sacred ash had been sprinkled carefully on the floor to form the Mate Circle — the place where destiny would reveal itself. Laughter and excited whispers filled the air. The scent of roasted meat, pinewood, and perfume mixed into something warm and festive. She-wolves adjusted their dresses. Warriors stood tall, pretending not to look nervous. Everyone was waiting for the same thing. Their mate. Aria stood near the back wall, trying to make herself small. Her plain grey dress felt even duller among the colorful gowns and shining jewelry. She clasped her hands tightly in front of her, afraid they might shake if she let them go. She shouldn’t be here. This ceremony was for real wolves. Not her. But Luna Meredith’s order echoed in her mind: Even you must attend. Her heart pounded loudly in her ears. Then the room shifted. It always did when he entered. Alpha Damon Blackwood walked into the hall. Conversations died instantly. Heads turned. Backs straightened. He wore an all-black ceremonial outfit, a dark cloak resting over his broad shoulders. The Alpha symbol, stitched in silver thread, gleamed across his chest. His dark hair fell carelessly over his forehead, and his sharp eyes scanned the room with quiet authority. Power rolled off him like heat. Every she-wolf stared at him with open desire. Aria lowered her eyes quickly before anyone noticed she had been staring too. “Tonight,” Luna Meredith announced from the front, her voice clear and commanding, “the Moon Goddess reveals destiny. May every unmated wolf find the one written in their soul.” Cheers erupted. One by one, unmated wolves stepped into the ash circle. Aria remained where she was, hoping no one would notice her. Then— “Aria.” Her head snapped up. The Luna was looking directly at her. “Step into the circle.” A wave of laughter spread through the hall. “Why?” someone whispered loudly. “So she can mate with air?” Aria’s face burned. “Luna, I don’t think—” “Step. Into. The circle.” Her legs moved before her pride could protest. She walked forward, feeling dozens of mocking eyes on her back. Each step felt heavier than the last. She entered the circle, standing awkwardly near the edge. She wished the ground would open and swallow her. And then… It happened. A strange warmth bloomed in her chest. Soft at first. Then stronger. Then overwhelming. Her breath caught. Her heart began racing so fast she thought she might faint. What is this? She looked up instinctively. And her eyes collided with Damon’s. Everything stopped. The noise faded. The whispers disappeared. All she could hear was her own heartbeat pounding like a drum inside her ears. Damon froze. His confident expression shattered into shock. His eyes widened slightly, staring at her as if seeing her for the first time in his life. A voice echoed inside Aria’s mind. Clear. Deep. Undeniable. Mate. Her knees nearly buckled. No. No, this couldn’t be real. Damon took a step forward, his gaze locked onto hers with an intensity that made her tremble. “Aria…” he said her name slowly, like it was unfamiliar on his tongue. Gasps rippled through the hall. Everyone felt it now. The bond. The truth. “The Alpha’s mate is the wolfless girl?” “This must be a mistake…” Aria’s eyes filled with tears. Joy. Disbelief. Hope so strong it hurt. The Moon Goddess had chosen her. She took a shaky step toward him. “Alpha, I—” For one brief second, she saw it. Something soft in his eyes. Something warm. Then it vanished. His jaw tightened. His expression hardened into cold stone. And Aria felt it before he spoke. The rejection forming. “No,” Damon said flatly. Her world tilted. He looked around the hall at the shocked faces, the whispering wolves, the judgment in their eyes. Then back at her. His voice rose, loud enough for everyone to hear. “I, Alpha Damon Blackwood, reject you, Aria Nightshade, as my mate.” The words hit her like a physical blow. The bond inside her chest snapped violently. Pain exploded through her body. A scream tore from her throat as she collapsed to her knees, clutching her chest, gasping for air. It felt like her heart was being ripped out. Some wolves looked horrified. Others looked satisfied. Through blurred vision, she saw Damon step back from her as if she disgusted him. “I refuse to accept a wolfless weakling as my Luna,” he continued coldly. “The Moon Goddess has made a mistake.” Aria shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “Please… don’t…” But he wasn’t looking at her anymore. He was looking at Selena Frost. The most beautiful she-wolf in the pack. Selena stepped forward, pretending to look shocked, but Aria caught the flicker of triumph in her eyes. Damon extended his hand to Selena. And whispers exploded across the hall. Aria’s chest felt hollow. Empty. Broken. She tried to stand, but her legs trembled beneath her. This wasn’t just rejection. This was humiliation. Public. Cruel. Final. “I will choose my Luna myself,” Damon declared. “Not fate. Not the Moon Goddess.” Those words hurt more than the rejection. Because they meant he didn’t just reject her. He rejected destiny. He rejected her existence. Low laughter started again around the room. Aria forced herself to stand. She couldn’t stay here. She couldn’t let them see her fall apart. She turned and ran. Out of the hall. Out of the packhouse. Into the cold night. She didn’t stop. Tears blurred her vision as branches scratched her arms and legs. She crossed the pack borders without thinking, running straight into the forbidden forest no one dared to enter. She didn’t care. She had nothing left. Her mate had rejected her. Her pack had laughed. Her heart was shattered beyond repair. She ran deeper into the darkness, not noticing how the forest grew quieter. Colder. Stranger. Until— A deep, terrifying growl echoed behind her. Aria froze. Slowly, trembling, she turned around. Two glowing silver eyes stared at her from the shadows. Not wolf. Not human. Something far more dangerous. Her breath caught. And before she could scream Darkness swallowed her whole.
