Finn’s heart pounded. It was getting dark and the walls of the alley were closing in around him. He couldn’t leave Mickey to those brutes and maybe, just maybe, Ryder was his ticket to the Angel and to Tessie. If there was even the smallest chance, he would make an ally of him yet. He had an idea by the name of Billy Brittle. But first, he had to get out of Jacob’s Island.
Straightening his coat and cap, he moved back the way they had come and the girl with the apple crouched still in her corner. She didn’t shrink away as he moved towards her, though shifting her feet, she looked beyond him.
Waving his hand in front of her face, she jolted and Finn stepped back. “Can yer show me how to get out of here?”
