Back at the house, Ruby and Tessie stood back with their arms folded as Madochée pushed a small toy horse on wheels across the rug of her bedroom. Behind the screen, Martha was pouring warm water into a tub, as a younger maid laid out an undershirt. "This is the smallest one, miss," she said as its length hung off the bed.
"Oh. Here." Ruby shook her head. "Send Lucas to the Moseleys for two sets of day clothes. Tell them she is up to here.” She put her hand just above her hip measuring Madochée's height. "And of slight frame. Go."
The young woman nodded, and in a bit of a tizzy, rushed from the room.
