Chapter Five — The Truth We Chose

971 Words
Victoria stepped out of the car and stared at the small lakeside house hidden among the trees. Her heart raced as she looked at the woman standing on the porch. She knew that face. “Mom?” The woman covered her mouth, tears filling her eyes. “Victoria.” Victoria ran toward her. Elena Hayes pulled her into a tight embrace, both of them crying. After a moment, Victoria pulled away. “You're alive. Why did everyone tell me you were dead?” Elena looked toward the lake. “Because I had no choice.” “Then tell me the truth.” They went inside while Alexander waited outside. “I didn't die in an accident,” Elena began. “Fifteen years ago, I discovered that Richard Blackwood was stealing millions from the family company.” “Alexander's uncle?” Elena nodded. “When Richard realized I knew, he tried to silence me. He caused the accident that killed Alexander's older brother and made it appear that I was responsible.” Victoria stared at her in shock. “Your father helped me disappear because Richard threatened you. He believed hiding me was the only way to keep you safe.” “So Dad knew you were alive?” “Yes.” Victoria's eyes filled with tears. “Why didn't you come back?” “I was afraid.” Elena reached beneath a cabinet and pulled out a metal box. “I kept the original documents, bank records, and recordings that prove what Richard did.” Victoria looked at the box. “This ends now.” That evening, Alexander drove them back to New York. Elena was taken to a secure hotel while Alexander prepared an emergency board meeting. The next morning, Richard entered the boardroom confidently. He stopped when he saw Elena. “You.” Alexander stood. “For years, someone has been stealing from this company.” Richard tried to remain calm. “And you called this meeting to accuse me?” “No,” Alexander said. “I called it to expose you.” He placed the documents on the table. “We have the financial records, bank transfers, and your confession.” A recording began to play. Richard's own voice filled the room. His face turned pale. “You can't prove anything.” Alexander looked at him coldly. “The police are already downstairs.” Moments later, officers entered and arrested Richard. Victoria watched him being taken away. For the first time in years, she felt free. The secrets that had followed her family for so long were finally exposed. Weeks passed. Elena remained in New York and slowly rebuilt her relationship with Victoria. Alexander continued running Blackwood Enterprises, but things between him and Victoria had changed. Their contract was almost over. One evening, Alexander found Victoria standing beside the window. He placed an envelope on the table. “What is this?” “Your freedom.” Victoria opened it and found divorce papers. “Our agreement is finished,” Alexander said. “You don't owe me anything anymore.” Victoria looked at him. “And that's what you want?” “No.” His voice softened. “I want you. But not because of a contract.” He stepped closer. “Somewhere between pretending to be your husband and actually becoming one, I fell in love with you.” Victoria's eyes filled with tears. “You challenged me. You never allowed my money or my name to control you. You made me see things differently.” Victoria picked up the divorce papers. Then she tore them in half. Alexander stared at her. “I don't want your money,” she whispered. “And I don't want to stay because I need your protection.” She stepped closer. “I want you because I choose you.” Alexander smiled. “Are you sure?” “Completely.” He gently took her hand. “Then let me do this the right way.” Three months later, they stood beneath a white floral arch at Blackwood Estate. This time, there was no contract. No secret. Only a promise. Elena sat in the front row, smiling through her tears as Victoria walked toward Alexander. When Victoria reached him, he took her hands. “I promise to love you without conditions, respect your independence, and choose you every day.” Victoria smiled. “And I promise to stand beside you, not behind you. I choose you, Alexander—not because you're a billionaire, but because you're the man I love.” They kissed as their families applauded. Later that night, Victoria stood with Alexander on the balcony, looking over the city lights. “Do you ever think about how this started?” “A contract?” he asked. She laughed. “A ridiculous contract.” Alexander smiled. “The best mistake I ever made.” Victoria rested her head against his shoulder. Their marriage had begun with secrets, suspicion, and a price. But it had ended with something money could never buy. Choice. Trust. Love. Victoria finally understood that she didn't belong beside Alexander because of his wealth or his name. She belonged there because they had chosen each other freely. And this time, there were no secrets left between them. As the music faded, Victoria looked around at the people who had witnessed their journey. She thought about the woman she had been before meeting Alexander: cautious, independent, and determined to build a life on her own. She was still that woman. The difference was that she had finally learned that choosing love did not mean losing herself. Alexander had not taken away her strength. He had given her someone worthy of sharing it. “And for the first time, Victoria knew that their love was real, lasting, and completely theirs.
