Chapter 5 – A New Territory

Part 1 Lyla hesitated. The stranger Alpha’s words hung in the cool night air. Come with me. Her heart pounded as she stared at him. Just hours ago she had been rejected, humiliated, and cast out by her own pack. Now another Alpha was standing before her, offering protection. It almost felt too good to be true. “I don’t even know who you are,” Lyla said cautiously. The man watched her for a moment, as if deciding how much to reveal. Then he finally spoke. “My name is Alpha Kael Nightshade.” The name sent a ripple of recognition through Lyla’s mind. Nightshade. Her eyes widened slightly. “You’re… the Alpha of the Shadowclaw Pack?” Kael’s golden eyes flickered with quiet amusement. “So you’ve heard of me.” Of course she had. The Shadowclaw Pack was one of the strongest packs in the region—known for their powerful warriors and the ruthless Alpha who led them. Stories about Kael Nightshade were whispered across many territories. Some said he was merciless in battle. Others said no enemy had ever defeated him. And now that terrifying Alpha was standing in front of her… offering help. Lyla swallowed nervously. “Why are you helping me?” she asked quietly. Kael studied her carefully before answering. “You were about to be attacked by rogues,” he said simply. “That’s reason enough.” But Lyla had a feeling there was more to it. She could still feel the strange pull in her chest whenever she looked at him. Her wolf was unusually alert. Excited. Mate… Lyla quickly pushed the thought away. That was impossible. A wolf only had one true mate. And hers had already rejected her. Right? Kael turned and glanced deeper into the forest. “We need to move,” he said calmly. “My territory isn’t far from here.” Lyla hesitated only a second longer. Then she nodded. “Okay.” For the first time since leaving the Bloodmoon Pack, she didn’t feel completely alone. Part 2 The journey through the forest was quiet. Kael walked ahead of her, his movements confident and effortless as he navigated the dark woods. Even in human form, his presence radiated power. Lyla followed carefully behind him, occasionally glancing around nervously. The forest felt different here. Darker. Stronger. After nearly an hour of walking, Kael suddenly stopped. “We’re here,” he said. Lyla stepped beside him and looked ahead. Her breath caught in amazement. Spread across a wide clearing was a massive pack settlement surrounded by tall stone walls and watchtowers. Lanterns glowed warmly across dozens of buildings, and she could see warriors patrolling the area. The Shadowclaw Pack territory looked far larger and more organized than Bloodmoon. “This is your pack?” Lyla whispered. Kael nodded. Before they could step forward, two warriors at the entrance immediately straightened when they saw their Alpha. “Alpha Kael!” one of them greeted respectfully. Then their eyes shifted to Lyla. Curiosity flickered across their faces. “Is everything alright?” the other warrior asked. Kael’s voice was calm but firm. “Yes.” His gaze briefly flickered toward Lyla. “She’s under my protection.” The warriors nodded instantly without asking another question. No one dared challenge their Alpha. As they walked through the gates, Lyla noticed several pack members glancing at her with curiosity. She felt slightly self-conscious walking beside such a powerful Alpha. “What will happen now?” she asked quietly. Kael slowed his steps. “For tonight,” he said, “you’ll rest.” He gestured toward a large building near the center of the settlement. “You’ll stay in the guest house.” Lyla blinked in surprise. “You’re really letting me stay here?” Kael looked down at her, his golden eyes steady. “Yes.” Then he added something that made her chest tighten. “Until you decide what you want to do next.” Lyla looked away slightly. She didn’t know what she wanted anymore. Her entire life had been built around the Bloodmoon Pack. Now that life was gone. As they approached the guest house, Kael suddenly stopped walking again. Lyla turned toward him. “What is it?” Kael was staring at her strangely. Almost intensely. For a moment he said nothing. Then he asked a question that made Lyla’s stomach twist. “Tell me something honestly.” She nodded slowly. “What?” His golden eyes darkened slightly. “When Damon rejected you…” Kael paused. “Did your wolf die?” Lyla’s eyes widened. “No,” she whispered. “That’s… impossible.” Most wolves whose mates rejected them eventually lost their wolf completely. But Lyla could still feel hers. Weak… but alive. Kael’s expression changed slightly when he heard her answer. Almost like he had just confirmed a suspicion. “Interesting,” he murmured. Lyla frowned. “Why?” Kael didn’t answer right away. Instead, he looked up at the moon above them. Then back at her. And for the first time since meeting him, a slow smile appeared on his face. “Because,” he said quietly, “That means your story isn’t over yet.”
