Part 1
Morning came slowly.
Soft sunlight filtered through the window of the guest house, casting warm light across the wooden floor.
Lyla stirred in the bed.
For a moment, she didn’t remember where she was.
The unfamiliar room, the scent of a different pack, the quiet sounds of wolves moving outside…
Then everything came rushing back.
The Mate Ceremony.
Damon.
The rejection.
The forest.
Alpha Kael.
Her chest tightened slightly at the memories, but the unbearable pain from the broken bond had faded during the night.
It was still there… but weaker.
Almost like a distant echo.
Lyla slowly sat up, surprised that her body felt stronger than it had the night before.
Her knee no longer hurt.
The scratches on her arms had almost completely healed.
“That’s strange…” she murmured.
Normally, injuries like those would take days to heal.
Her wolf stirred gently inside her mind.
Stronger than yesterday.
Something is different.
Lyla frowned slightly.
She climbed out of bed and walked toward the mirror on the wall.
For a moment she simply stared at her reflection.
Her long dark hair fell over her shoulders, and her eyes looked brighter than usual.
Almost… glowing.
A strange energy pulsed faintly through her body.
Before she could think more about it, there was a knock on the door.
“Come in,” Lyla said.
The door opened slowly.
A young woman stepped inside carrying a tray of food.
She had kind eyes and wore the symbol of the Shadowclaw Pack on her shirt.
“Good morning,” she said with a friendly smile. “Alpha Kael asked me to check on you.”
Lyla blinked in surprise.
“He did?”
The woman nodded and set the tray down.
“My name is Aria. I help take care of guests here.”
Lyla smiled softly.
“Thank you.”
Aria studied her face for a moment before speaking again.
“You’re the girl who came with Alpha Kael last night, right?”
Lyla hesitated before nodding.
“Yes.”
Aria’s expression turned curious.
“You must be important.”
Lyla shook her head quickly.
“No… I’m really not.”
But Aria didn’t seem convinced.
“Our Alpha never brings strangers into the pack,” she said. “Especially not personally.”
Lyla didn’t know what to say to that.
Before the conversation could continue, a deep voice suddenly spoke from the doorway.
“That’s enough gossip for this morning.”
Both women turned.
Alpha Kael was standing in the doorway.
Part 2
The moment Lyla saw him, her heart skipped.
Kael leaned casually against the doorframe, his golden eyes fixed on her.
He looked different in daylight.
Less mysterious.
But no less intimidating.
Aria immediately straightened.
“Alpha,” she greeted respectfully.
Kael nodded slightly.
“You can leave us.”
Aria quickly gathered herself and walked out of the room, closing the door behind her.
Silence filled the space.
Lyla suddenly felt nervous again.
“Good morning,” she said softly.
Kael stepped inside.
“How are you feeling?”
“Better,” Lyla replied.
She hesitated before adding, “Actually… much better.”
Kael studied her carefully.
“I thought so.”
Lyla frowned slightly.
“What do you mean?”
Instead of answering immediately, Kael walked closer.
“Your injuries healed faster than normal, didn’t they?”
Lyla’s eyes widened.
“How did you know?”
Kael stopped a few steps away from her.
“Because I can feel your energy.”
Lyla blinked in confusion.
“My… energy?”
Kael nodded.
“There’s something unusual about your wolf.”
Her stomach twisted nervously.
“I don’t understand.”
Kael crossed his arms thoughtfully.
“Normally, when a wolf is rejected by their mate, their wolf begins to weaken,” he explained.
“Sometimes it disappears completely.”
Lyla nodded slowly.
“I’ve heard that.”
“But yours didn’t,” Kael continued.
“In fact… it’s getting stronger.”
Lyla’s heart began racing.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Kael’s golden eyes narrowed slightly as he studied her.
“Unless,” he said slowly,
“You’re not an ordinary wolf.”
The words made Lyla freeze.
“What are you saying?”
Kael didn’t answer right away.
Instead, he took another step closer.
Close enough that she could clearly see the intensity in his eyes.
“There are rare wolves,” he said quietly.
“Wolves born with ancient bloodlines.”
Lyla’s pulse quickened.
“And?”
Kael’s voice lowered.
“And sometimes… those wolves have more than one destiny.”
Her wolf suddenly stirred wildly inside her.
Kael seemed to notice.
His golden eyes flashed with sudden realization.
Then he whispered the words that made Lyla’s heart stop.
“I think…”
“You may have just survived a rejection that should have destroyed you.”
He paused.
“Because you were never meant to belong to Damon in the first place.”
Lyla stared at him in shock.
“Then… who was I meant for?”
Kael held her gaze for a long moment.
Then his wolf pushed forward in his mind.
Powerful.
Certain.
His voice dropped to a near whisper.
“Maybe…”
“Me.”
