chapter 2

615 Words
I come from an ordinary family. After graduation, I got a job at a state-owned power company. Jason is the son of a retired official. He has enjoyed a privileged life and is now in middle management at a private company. Because I love Jason very much, after we got married, every time there was a contradiction, I took the initiative to compromise. Also because I have never been pregnant, I always fell like I owe a debt to Jason. For the family, I often suppress my emotions, naive thinking that giving can be exchanged for happiness. Grace Wellsley became Jason's boss a month ago. The happiness I look forward to will never be achieved. Jason started working overtime a lot. He always said it was to help Miss Grace with the new energy project. One night, I asked him. “Are you the only one on the project team? Why do you always work overtime?” Jason said I didn't know the rules. “Miss Grace is new here and doesn't know the processes. As the project leader, I have to help her. It's about the company's future.” After we argued, Jason left in contempt. He stayed out all night and his phone was never answered. The next morning, I saw an updated status on Jason. It was a picture of him and Grace Wellsley holding hands in a high-class business club. “The new energy project will bring the company a good return on investment thanks to Miss Grace.” Colleagues at the company liked the message. “You finally met someone who admires you, and your career must be going well.” “You are the best partners and look forward to your next cooperation.” I felt tired and this marriage was suffocating. The drone light show ended at nine o'clock in the evening, but Jason didn't get home until eleven o'clock. I didn't want to guess what he was doing. He hugged me and said sorry: “Emmy, I'm sorry today...” I interrupted him. “I know, just work.” “The company has temporarily formed a new project team, and Grace and I are both in it. Hearing what he said, I only felt extremely ridiculous. Whose company would have only the two of them working overtime until this late? I pushed him away and said, “I'm tired, I'm going to sleep.” After a busy day, I was tired and didn't want to argue. My attitude seemed to upset Jason. “This is just a working relationship. Why are you always distrustful?” “Think more about my career.” He always used this to get me to accept what he was doing. This time was no different. I have no hope for this marriage. I laughed:“Jason,Are you kidding me?Do you stay with other women all day long and you want me not to misunderstand your relationship? Do you think I am one of those submissive female employees in your company?” “Don't think you are innocent. If I refuse to work overtime, will I be fired? I looked Jason in the eye and asked, “Are you saying Grace is forcing you? If so, I will call to report it now.” Jason froze. He became angry and warned me not to go too far. “I'm already lenient with you, don't challenge me!” I ignored him and said, “I have to prepare for the project bid tomorrow and need to rest. Make yourself at home.” I walked into the study and closed the door. I sat in front of the computer and began to revise the bid proposal.
