The study was quiet.
Jason pushed the door open and walked in, holding a stack of documents. He was wearing a suit, his hair was combed, and he looked like he had just returned from work.
He put the documents on the table and said, “This is our company's latest new energy project proposal. What do you think?”
I looked up and saw he had an apologetic look in his eyes.
“Don't be angry. Grace and I are just colleagues.”
He continued, “I was wrong.”
“Is next Monday your father's retirement anniversary? I'll come with you.”
When I was very angry, he would promise to accompany me to do things that I usually want to do but he always shirks.
But at this moment, I have no interest in his approach.
But I was inevitably sad, because this was the first time Jason had offered to participate in my father's activities.
I invited him before we got married, but he refused on the grounds of "preparing a quarterly performance report".
After three years of marriage, he had never done anything with my family.
Now, no matter what our future is, we should also go to my dad's party first.
I nodded, “Okay, let's go together.”
He smiled and hugged me.
I said, “I'm tired, let's rest first. I have to prepare for dad's retirement dinner tomorrow.”
Jason watched me walk to the guest room.
On Monday after work, I saw Jason and Grace Wellsley leaving the building together.
They were dressed in stylish professional clothes and looked good together.
When he saw my car, Jason said goodbye to Grace Wellsley and left.
Grace Wellsley looked at me meaningfully.
But today was my father's retirement anniversary, so I ignored her and drove to the hotel where the dinner was being held.
But before we got there, Jason's phone rang.
It was Grace Wellsley.
He hesitated but still connected the video call.
“Sorry for disturbing you, Jason. There's a problem with the quarterly project report. Can you come back? All the data is on your computer.”
I looked at Jason calmly. “Today is my father's retirement party. It's the first time you're attending my family's event.”
Jason looked troubled.
“But Grace said… Don't worry, I'll go back and sort it out right away and rush over.” He made his mind in a short time.
I knew it was Grace's car following our car.
I went to my father's retirement dinner alone.
I felt lonely when I saw my father's happy face. Two hours passed, and Jason still hadn't arrived.
It was raining when I left. My heart was cold.
I turned on the computer and started browsing the company's internal job transfer information and the MBA programs of universities.
Later, Jason told me that there was a problem with the data, and they reorganized a report overnight.
I don't believe it.
However, I was no longer interested in dismantling his excuses.
My attention had turned to my own career planning. Perhaps it was time to do something for myself.
