chapter 5

I opened the meditation app and began to breathe deeply in the sanatorium garden. My depression eased after a few minutes. Jason walked over. His suit was straight and his tie was perfect. “Yesterday, Grace came to visit and found Dad had a stroke. She sent him here in time.” “Without her, things would have been worse.” “You still care about these details?” I took a deep breath and looked Jason in the eye. “You're overthinking it. I wasn't angry.” I'm disappointed in the relationship. The income gap between us meant I suffered from my in-laws' cold eyes. When I met Jason by chance and it took two years of hard work to finally get together, I thought this was the beginning of happiness. His family was the bigger challenge. When I first met Jason's parents, they were against our relationship. I came from an ordinary family and Jason's family was well-off. Jason's father had a stroke before and had to retire early, which made the family's status decline. I took care of Jason's father and comforted Jason. Maybe because I was so dedicated, they finally accepted us when Jason's father got better and left the hospital. We're from two different worlds. Maybe I was too keen to fit in. There were probably things that were wrong from the start. Grace Wellsley spoke from behind. “Jason, Mr.Smith wants to talk to you.” “If you don't want to stay, go back. Can you get the medicine Dad bought from the house?” “It's in the study safe, you know the password.”Jason asked me to help him with the medicine, but before I go, Grace Wellsley straightened her Chanel suit and asked, “Any chance to discuss the new project?” I might have considered it before. But now... I shook my head. “Sorry, I still have work to do.” Grace Wellsley was annoyed and said, “I checked with Jason. You don't want children.” I replied, “It doesn't seem to have anything to do with you.” “Do you know about my past with Jason?” I heard Jason and Grace Wellsley were university classmates and good friends. I wasn't interested. “I don't know, and I don't want to know.” Grace Wellsley continued, embarrassed. “We went through a lot together. We were almost married and each other's first love.” “I had to leave because of family reasons.” “Three years ago, I came back. He contacted me then.” I laughed. “You mean the project bidding three years ago?” Grace Wellsley was surprised. “You know a lot about Jason. You really care about him.' I snorted. I helped Jason fight for that project. Grace Wellsley was still talking to herself, “He didn't care about your feelings.” Seeing her proud look, I said impatiently: "If this will satisfy you, I would be happy to cooperate with you , but now, I am not in the mood." I left, disgusted. I went to Jason's study. After getting the medicine, I was about to leave when I noticed something strange on the smart home control panel. Jason had a smart security system in his home so he could check on his father at any time. He was meticulous and checked it every day while I was away. If there was a problem, he would have noticed. It probably only malfunctioned in the past two days. I asked Jason about the security system. I got a call after sending the message. After connecting, I heard my father-in-law. “Look at what Grace sent, then look at yourself!” “Relying on your useless wife, how could you succeed!Tell her directly, you want a divorce!” Then Jason spoke. “Emmy, did you find the medicine?” I didn't answer. “The security system is out of order.” Jason paused. “Wasn't it fine a few days ago?” He checked it remotely and found it had broken. I said, “It's useless, I'll get it dismantled.” After a short silence, Jason replied, “Okay.” I stood in the study for a long time, unable to calm down. Perhaps it was time to reconsider my life.
