7 years had passed.
Nichole woke up from bed feeling much better than in the previous days. She had to take some days off from work to take care of her health. Waking up this morning, she felt better and ready to get back to work.
She works as a maid at Skyrocket Hotel, one of the best hotels in town, which pays well enough for her to take care of her expenses. She started working there 4 months after she gave birth to Jason.
She got herself ready for work and in the next 30 minutes, she was done preparing for work. She carried her bag and headed for her son's room.
“Good morning sleepy head” Nichole greeted him. She tapped him gently. He woke up reluctantly and mumbled “Good morning mum”, half opening his eyes.
“Hope your night was great,” Nichole asked.
“Yes, it was. Thanks, Mum” Jason replied, still feeling sleepy.
“ I am ready for work. I will see you in the evening when I am back,” Nichole said.
Jason opened his eyes fully and looked at his mum, who he thought was still ill.
“But mum, you are ill, you should rest”. Jason was so concerned about his mother's health.
“I am fine my boy, you do not have to worry about me” she smiled. “And you are aware bills can't settle themselves, someone needs to pay the bills”, she continued.
“Alright mum, I know,” he said feeling defeated, but there was nothing he could do, his mum needed to get back to work. “I love you, and please take care of yourself,” he continued.
“Yes, I will,” she replied. “Your grandma will get you prepared for school. I need to go now. Bye”
Jason calls her Aunt Maria his grandma. Aunt Maria has been taking care of him since childhood, and she is the only family he knows apart from his mother.
She kissed him on his cheek and stood to leave.
“Bye Mum,” he said.
Nichole checked on Aunt Maria. She was still sleeping. So she shut the door gently and left.
When she arrived at Skyrocket Hotel, she was surprised to see lots of people in the front of the hotel and most of them were journalists and camera crew reporting for various news organizations. They form a crowd at the entrance of the hotel obstructing her from passing. She had no choice but to pass through the back entrance of the hotel.
She could see they were interviewing someone, but she couldn't get a full glimpse of the person because of the crowd. She believes anyone they are interviewing must be connected to the hotel or a prominent person who came to the lodge at the hotel.
She passed the back entrance and headed for the changing room to put on her maid's uniform. She met her close colleague Alicia in the room.
“Good morning Alicia”. Nichole greeted
Alicia gave Nichole a big hug when she saw her. She was happy Nichole was back to work after days of falling sick.
“I am so happy you are back, Nichole,” Alicia said. “I have missed you so much, Nichole,” she continued.
“I missed you too, Alicia. Aunt Maria told me you dropped by the house yesterday to give me some fruit,” Alicia said.
“Yes I did, she told me you were asleep, so I had to leave”. She replied “I am happy you are fine now “
“What's happening? I saw pressmen outside the hotel interviewing someone. Do you have an idea who the person is?” Nichole asked.
“He is the new CEO of Skyrocket Hotel”, Alicia replied.
“New CEO of Skyrocket?” Nichole couldn't believe what she heard.
“We knew two days ago that the hotel had been sold to a new person and our jobs at the hotel are on the line” she added.
“So we are going to be sacked just because he bought the hotel,” Nichole said, feeling displeased about the news. “Doesn't he know people's sources of livelihood are attached to this hotel and how does he think we would survive without our job?” She added angrily.
Nichole was devastated about the news, resuming work after days of being sick, and hearing news like this made her upset.
“There is nothing we can do, Nichole. I also felt sad when I heard the news,” Alicia said.
Nichole thought about her son, Jason, Aunt Maria, feeding, and every expense tied to her salary. If she loses her job now, she might not be able to continue saving up for medical school, her long-time dream. And there are limited chances of getting a job that pays as high as the amount paid at the hotel.
The door opened and Susan, a colleague of theirs, entered. Her eyes were filled with tears, she was cleaning her nose with a tissue, and she was sobbing as she entered.
“What is it, Susan?” Nichole asked
The room was quiet waiting for Susan’s reply. After taking some time to calm herself, she began to talk
“I just got laid off,” Susan said faintly.
“You got laid off” Nichole repeated. “This is sad, come here Susan”. She hugged Susan
“Please don't cry again, you will get a better job,” Alicia said, patting her back.
After a few minutes, Susan feels better.
“Thank you guys, and thanks for the wonderful time we spent together,” Susan said. She packed her stuff from her locker, Nichole and Alicia took turns to hug her and she left.
“Look at how sad Susan is, this new CEO must be the devil's son to throw people out of their jobs without prior notice. It is heartbreaking” Nichole said angrily.
“Nichole, I don't want to think about this, let’s get to work. Hopefully, nothing happens to our jobs,” Susan said, feeling defeated.
“I doubt it, seeing what just happened to Susan some minutes ago,” Nichole said.
Alicia and Nichole changed into their maid uniforms and headed to clean their allocated rooms.
