Nichole couldn't stop thinking about the chances of her losing her job at Skyrocket Hotel. She had been sick for days and this could even be a disadvantage to her keeping her job. And she was angry at the new CEO who came out of the blue to disrupt the lives of people through their jobs.
Apart from Susan packing and leaving in the morning, she had seen more than 10 people from her unit and other units pack their stuff and left. This was a sad moment for the workers at Skyrocket Hotel.
Just a few minutes before her closing time, she was called by the manager of the company, Mr Andrew. My heart skipped a bit, but she summoned up the courage to meet him. She knew it was her turn to receive her dismissal letter. She took the elevator to the top floor where his office was located.
When she got to the front of his office, she knocked on his door, and immediately he told her to come in. She entered and saw him sitting on his chair, his eyeglasses covering his eyes, he managed to force a smile revealing his white set of teeth.
“Hello Miss Brent, how are you doing”, he stood to extend his hand towards her. Nichole extended hers and they shook hands.
“I am fine sir” she replied as calmly as she could.
Please have your seat, Miss Brent. Nichole took her seat, folded her arms, and looked at him squarely, expecting him to break the news.
“I know you must have gotten a hint as to the reason you are here,” he said, “but firstly, I must commend you, you have been a faithful worker in this company and it grieves me to be doing this,” he added.
Nichole kept looking at him as he delivered his well-prepared speech.
“The hotel was sold because it was running at a loss and the new owner believes cutting the hotel expenditures will keep the hotel from going bankrupt,” Mr Andrew said. “You know paying salaries is part of the company expenses, so we are laying off some of our workers, pending the time the hotel will be revived” he added
“But they could have been better ways of reviving the hotel rather than sacking people from their jobs,” Nichole said, still folding her hands.
“I am sorry, that is the solution the management could think of for now,” Mr Andrew said. “My secretary will hand over your dismissal letter to you and your full remuneration will be paid to you,” he added.
Nichole braced herself up, she didn't want to cry even if her eyes had gotten clouded with tears. She was pained by her dismissal news
“It's alright, thank you, sir,” Nichole said.
“The new CEO sent his apologies also,” Mr Alexander said, as though the CEO's apology would rectify what had been done.
“Tell him his apology was not accepted,” Nichole said sternly, looking at the manager.
Mr Alexander cleared his throat. “I guess we are done. Have a good day, Miss Brent.”
As she stood up to leave, the door opened and a tall man entered. He was well-built, putting on an expensive ironed suit, having a well-trimmed beard and a nice haircut with shining leather shoes that spoke of wealth. His cologne filled the office. She looked at the man that had just entered, and she was shocked at who she saw.
Nichole was tongue-tied, she couldn't believe the person standing close to her in the room. He looked older, built, and more handsome than the last time she saw him. She thought her sight was playing a trick on her, or she was hallucinating because of the sad news she received a few minutes ago. But no, he was right there before her. The man who left her over 7 years ago was the father of her only son, Jason.
ALEXANDER BROOKS!
Alexander stared at the woman before him, he could not have forgotten the face of the lady who he dreams of every night.
The lady he left 7 years ago just because of his selfishness. He could not believe she was right there in his hotel. He felt nothing but guilt as he looked at her, not knowing what to say. Thankfully, Mr. Alexander cleared the air.
“Good evening Mr Brooks, this is Miss Nichole Brent, one of the staff we had to lay off. I told her we were deeply sorry about it”. Mr Andrew introduced Nichole to Alexander.
“And this is Mr Alexander Brooks, the new CEO of Skyrocket Hotel “ Mr Andrew continued.
Nichole kept staring at Alexander, trying to grasp the old memories of him. Everything about him had changed within the space of 7 years.
Alexander got hold of himself and stretched his hands to shake her.
“How are you doing, Miss Brent?” asked Alexander, stretching his hand for a shake.
Nichole looked down at his hand, lifting her gaze to his eyes, and made a loud hiss. She hurriedly left, took the elevator, went downstairs, went to the changing room to pack her stuff and she left the building.
Alexander tried calling her back but she had left.
