CHAPTER SEVEN: CONTROL IS AN ILLUSION

1190 Words
The training grounds were quiet again. Too quiet. Like nothing had happened. Which was insulting, considering Lina felt like she had just survived being set on fire from the inside out. She sat on the cracked stone floor, arms resting on her knees, breathing slowly. In. Out. Like Kael had said. Not that she was doing it for him. Obviously. “Again.” She didn’t even look up. “No.” Silence. Then footsteps. Slow. Measured. Annoyingly calm. “You don’t get tired?” Lina muttered. “I do,” Kael replied. She finally glanced up. He didn’t look tired. Of course he didn’t. “I just don’t stop because of it.” She rolled her eyes. “Very inspiring. Truly life-changing.” “Get up.” “No.” A pause. Lina expected the usual. A command. A threat. Something controlling. Instead— “Fine.” She blinked. That again. Too easy. Suspicious. “What?” she asked, narrowing her eyes. Kael didn’t move. “Stay there.” Now she was definitely suspicious. “Why do I feel like I’m about to regret this?” “You are.” The air shifted. Subtle. Then not subtle at all. Heat prickled along Lina’s skin. Not from her. From him. Her eyes snapped to Kael. “What are you doing?” “Adjusting conditions,” he said calmly. “Don’t like the current ones?” “Don’t—” Too late. The temperature spiked. Fast. The air around her thickened, pressing against her lungs. Lina pushed herself to her feet instantly. “Okay— no— we’re not doing this—” “Control,” Kael said. “Not torture.” “Same difference.” The heat intensified. Not wild like her flames. This was controlled. Precise. Directed at her. Lina clenched her jaw as sweat formed instantly along her skin. Her chest tightened. Not from fear this time. From pressure. “You’re forcing it,” she said. “Yes.” “That’s not training.” “It is.” Her mark pulsed. Once. Hard. Lina inhaled sharply. “No—” The heat inside her responded immediately. Faster than before. Stronger. Like it had been waiting. “Kael—” “Control it.” “I’m trying!” “Try harder.” Flames flickered to life around her again. Unstable. Angry. They snapped at the air, reacting to the external pressure he was creating. Lina staggered slightly. This was different. Last time, it felt like she was losing control. This time— It felt like something was pushing back. Her power wasn’t just reacting. It was resisting. Fighting. “What is happening?” she demanded. “Your fire doesn’t like being contained,” Kael said. “No kidding!” The flames surged. Higher. Hotter. Lina’s breath hitched as they spiraled around her, more aggressive now. More aware. Her heart pounded. Fast. Too fast. “Focus,” Kael said. “I am focused!” “Not correctly.” He stepped closer. Into the heat again. Unaffected. Of course. “Stop reacting to me,” he said. Lina glared at him. “You’re literally causing the problem!” “And you’re feeding it.” That hit. Because she knew it was true. Her anger. Her frustration. Her refusal— It was all making it worse. “…I hate this,” she muttered. “Not relevant.” The flames flared again. Lina closed her eyes tightly. “Breathe,” Kael said. She exhaled sharply. “This better work.” “Or?” “I combust and take you with me.” A pause. “…Unlikely,” he said. Rude. Lina forced herself to inhale slowly. Deep. Ignoring the heat. Ignoring him. Ignoring everything. For a moment— Nothing changed. Then— Something shifted. The flames flickered. Not gone. But… less violent. Lina’s brows furrowed. Again. She breathed again. Slower. Steadier. The fire responded. Not fully. But enough. Enough to notice. “Good,” Kael said quietly. She didn’t open her eyes. Didn’t want to break it. Didn’t want to lose whatever this was. The flames lowered slightly. Still there. Still dangerous. But not attacking everything around her. Lina’s shoulders relaxed just a fraction. “…Is this it?” she asked. “No.” Of course not. “Then what is it?” “The beginning.” She opened her eyes slowly. The fire still circled her. But it wasn’t wild anymore. It was… waiting. That was worse. “Why does it feel like it’s watching me?” she asked. “Because it is.” Lina stared at him. “…I’m sorry?” “Your fire is not mindless,” Kael said. “It responds. It learns.” “That’s not comforting.” “It’s not meant to be.” The flames pulsed again. Lina felt it. A shift. Like something inside her was stretching. Expanding. Testing its limits. “What happens if I lose control again?” she asked. Kael didn’t hesitate. “I stop you.” “And if you can’t?” A pause. Just long enough to matter. “…Then we have a problem.” That was not an answer. That was a warning. The flames flickered again. Then— Slowly— They disappeared. Like they had never been there. Lina stood still. Breathing. Waiting. Nothing came back. No surge. No pain. Just… quiet. “…I did that,” she said. Not a question. A realization. “Yes,” Kael said. She looked at her hands. Normal. Completely normal. But she knew now. There was nothing normal about her anymore. “…I don’t like it,” she admitted. Kael’s gaze didn’t shift. “You don’t have to like it.” “Good.” A pause. “Because I don’t.” Silence settled again. But it wasn’t as heavy as before. Still tense. Still uncertain. But… different. Less chaotic. More controlled. Lina exhaled slowly. “…So what now?” she asked. Kael studied her for a moment. Then— “Now you learn what you are fighting.” That didn’t sound good. “At this point,” Lina muttered, “I’m expecting nothing to sound good.” “You’re learning.” Before she could respond— A sharp sound cut through the air. A horn. Loud. Urgent. Not part of training. Lina’s head snapped toward the sound. “What is that?” Kael didn’t answer immediately. His expression changed. Not dramatically. But enough. Something cold settled into his eyes. “Trouble,” he said. The horn sounded again. Closer this time. Followed by shouting. Movement. Chaos building fast. Lina’s stomach dropped. “That doesn’t sound like a small problem.” “It isn’t.” A guard rushed into the training grounds. Breathless. Panicked. “My king—” Kael turned toward him. “What is it?” “The outer perimeter— it’s been breached.” Silence. Sharp. Deadly. Lina felt it immediately. That shift in him. Power tightening. Control sharpening. “By what?” Kael asked. The guard hesitated. Which was never good. “…They didn’t come alone.” Kael’s eyes darkened. “Say it.” “…The Lizard Clans.”
