My heart stopped.
Nathaniel’s words circled around and around in my head. She’s pregnant. How was that possible? She’d been in the underground for so long...
Then it hit me—the truth of her impregnation—just as the sound of Katie’s sobs cracked open my heart.
I got up from my bed, and without thinking, picked her up, rearranged the blankets, and sat back down with her in my arms.
“It’s okay. It’ll be okay.” I rocked her on the bed, Katie’s sobs ringing in the room.
I dragged my gaze up to Nathaniel, where he stood staring down at us.
“It’s okay,” I said again on automatic, cupping Katie’s head to me.
She pushed up from my chest and glared at me. “It’s not okay!”
