“Don’t you dare die on me!” I yelled at Shadow as he took a final breath.
I screamed, standing up and forcing my arms out in front of me. This was not the time for my lover to die.

I closed my eyes and drew on every bit of magic I had. I gathered every tiny shred of strength and love I for Shadow, and I poured it all into the spell I worked over his broken body.
I screamed as I dropped to the floor, pressing a hand to Shadow’s back and feeling the softest amount of breath rising and falling from him.
“Help!” I yelled, though to who, I didn’t know.
Everyone around me was dead, and I couldn’t lift my arms now. The spell I’d used to kill the vampire father, followed by my attempt at healing Shadow, had taken every bit of magic I had. I was done for now.
