Richard sat alone in his office. The city lights glowed outside the tall glass windows, but he didn’t see them. His eyes were fixed on the photo on his desk the one he had secretly taken of Ann at the company picnic. She had been laughing, holding a drink, the wind playing with her hair. She looked free, full of life. Now, she was gone. Vanished without a trace. And she was carrying his child. Every day since she left had been torture. At first, he had been angry. Angry at her for disappearing. Angry at himself for letting her go. But that anger didn’t last long. Soon, it was replaced by regret. Deep, gnawing regret that ate at his heart day and night.
