CHAPTER 03_ Breakfast at Everton

961 Words
As I pushed open the curtains, the morning sunlight flooded my room, illuminating my doubts. The enticing aroma of freshly baked pastries and sizzling bacon wafted up through my nose. Making my stomach grow with hunger. For how long will I stay hidden in this room? I scoffed. I would rather die in the hands of one of the princes than die because of starvation. Taking a deep breath, I descended the staircase, following the irresistible aroma to the dining table. The warm glow of sunlight streamed through the windows, creating a warm ambiance. Upon entering, the conversation ceased, all three pairs of piercing eyes turned to me. I cracked my voice, avoiding eye contact with each one of them as I mumbled a timid. “Good morning” My gaze drifted around the room, and my heart skipped a beat. King Thomas sat at the table, alongside his sons. I thought this was the prince’s private quarters, not a gathering place for the entire royal family. “Good morning Ava,” King Thomas said, his voice accommodating. “Welcome to the family breakfast. Please join us” I scanned the table, my gaze landing on an empty chair across the table, and I decided that that was the perfect chair for me. Before I could make an attempt, a deep, commanding voice directed me elsewhere. “Please come closer and have your seat” he said, urging at the empty seat beside Prince Elvis. I was terrified to look up, but it wasn’t Prince Elvin. This voice sounded more palpable, a deep baritone. I took a step closer in obedience, my eyes still casting downwards. As I sat, all three intense gazes scrutinized me. I fidgeted under their gaze. The princes’ laughter and conversation resumed, momentarily forgetting my presence. I seized the opportunity to compose myself, waiting for the staff to serve breakfast. King Thomas' voice broke my silence. “Introduce yourself, young lady.” “H-hello everyone, I’m Ava Black” I stuttered. I think King Thomas noticed my fear, when I raised my eyes to look at him, he shot me a heart-warming smile, that immediately reduced my rising tension. “I’m Prince Theo and these are my brothers.” His voice, very friendly and outgoing. “Prince Elvis” “Prince Ryker” They replied, helping themselves. I took a closer look, observing each one of their features. Prince Theo looked younger than the other two. His messy brown hair and bright blue eyes gave him a playful air. His relaxed demeanor put me at ease, despite his youthful exuberance, his confident tone belied a sharp mind. Prince Ryker was obviously the eldest, he offered a charming smile. His chiseled features and piercing green eyes exuded confidence. As he engaged King Thomas in discussion, his confidence and poise became even more apparent. My eyes drifted to Prince Elvis and our eyes met briefly, his expression was neutral, but a flicker of recognition danced in his eyes, sending a flutter down my chest. He nodded curtly and, I sensed a bit of relief wash over me. At least I was with a familiar face, Prince Elvis. A strategic thought formed in my mind. Perhaps, choosing prince Elvis would facilitate a smoother exit from the manor, if he accepts to be mine. That sounded like a very good idea to me. Except… Except the king won’t let me go. It was clearly stated_six months of cohabitation before any decision is made. I scoffed in silence, over the rising thought. The servant walked away after serving the dishes. The whole table was filled with an array of delicacies, inviting us to sample them as willing. My stomach grumbled again at these delicacies. I grabbed the spoon and served myself, I couldn't wait any longer. Prince Ryker began discussing business ventures, seeking the King’s input. Prince Theo chimed in arguing his perspective well-naturally, while Prince Elvis listened attentively, his expression unreadable. I mumbled on my bacon, chewing slowly and carefully to avoid drawing attention. As an outsider in this grand household, I felt inclined to blend into the background. The conversation swirled around me, with occasional attempts to include me in their circle but I kept my response brief and short. Prince Ryker inquired about my interest. “Ava, do you have any hobbies or passions?” I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. “I enjoy reading and baking” I replied softly. Prince Theo playfully teased me. "Baking?" “We’ll have to put your skills to the test someday.” And the group chuckled. I would be absolutely thrilled to prepare something special for the royal family, as a gesture of kindness and appreciation. However, considering the extensive staff and rigorous protocols in place, I highly doubt I'll be granted the opportunity to do so. The palace's impressive roster of skilled chefs, butlers, and household staff ensures every need is meticulously met. It's unlikely that my amateur culinary efforts would be permitted, no matter how well-intentioned. As breakfast drew to a close, King Thomas pushed back his chair, signaling the end of the meal. “Today, Ava will begin her orientation. You three would ensure that she’s acquainted with the minor’s facilities and staff.” Prince Ryker nodded solemnly. “I’ll take care of it, father.” Prince Theo grinned. "If she wants to see the most interesting aspects... I’ll gladly show her." Prince Elvis stood, his eyes never meeting mine. “I have matters to attend to” he muttered, his voice low and distant. Without another word, he exited the dining room, leaving me bewildered. Had last night’s connection been merely a product of my imagination? That must have been the other side of my dream.
