After a well-deserved massage and some time to decompress in a sauna, I felt my anger over the situation wane. There really wasn't anything I could do about it. I could expose his affair, but that would run my chances of getting a new job. No boss wanted a secretary who couldn't keep her mouth shut. Besides, I would lose my best reference. So, with a large sigh, I had decided not to do anything just yet. At least until I had a new job and I felt secure in it.
As I returned to the lobby of the spa, I saw Atticus waiting for me with flowers in hand. I smiled brightly as I took them from him gently. It was a wildflower bouquet which was my favorite. Roses were nice but way too overplayed. I gave him a quick kiss to thank him.
"I have to make a run to the office but I will drop you off at home first, alright?" I frowned at him and he shook his head softly. "The world doesn't give me a break even when my baby needs me." I knew how important his job was to him though and it was not unusual for him to get called in like this for a meeting or something.
"I can get an Uber back if you need it." I offered and he shook his head.
"No, they can wait for me to drop you at home. I am not making you take an Uber back. It's ten extra minutes." It was true that our place was on the way to the office. I sighed softly and nodded. He led me back to the car. I gave him a quick kiss and told him I would get inside on my own. He needed to go before those old men got cranky. He laughed at that.
Once inside, I changed into one of my nighties and felt a sense of relief from being free of my work clothes. Though I will be free of them for a while, I suppose. Being 32 and suddenly unemployed felt like such a chore. I wasn't some young hot thing anymore. Though I suppose I was still mostly hot in the looks department. Just not in the job market. After a short rest, I did a quick search on my laptop for open positions at good companies but they didn't often advertise.
You have to know someone to get hired at some of the best places. That was how it worked. Even in a city full of people. The elites were picky. Boston could be a dog-eat-dog world in some of the fanciest places. I gave up on the internet searches pretty quickly and instead made up that list to send to my old boss. I would send it after getting Atticus's opinion. Though I would tell him I was just thinking of applying to those places.
It was two weeks later when Atticus came home early. I was busy writing and sprucing up my resume to send out when he beamed at me. I took the pen out of my mouth and put down the list I had made a week ago of the places to send it to. Several of them had been crossed out by now.
"Honey, I have perfect news." He said excitedly and almost bounced in place like a kid. "I got you a job." I stood from the desk chair.
"What? How?" He walked over and wrapped his arms around my waist. I smiled at the sweet embrace.
"You know how I said someone was retiring early because she bagged a rich husband?" I nodded, remembering the office gossip he liked to share on the rare occasion. "Well, she happens to be a secretary to the CEO and I convinced said CEO to hire you to replace her. You meet him tomorrow." I stood in shock for a moment and my jaw fell open. Atticus didn't just work for any company. It was a big one. One far bigger than the one I had been fired from. About ten times bigger.
"Wait, but how? I'm not qualified for that job babe." On paper, yes. In the eyes of those people? Not a chance. He smiled but he rubbed the back of his neck softly.
"Weeelllll." I narrowed my eyes softly at his guilty expression. "The CEO happens to be my brother." I felt my mouth drop open again and he cringed softly at my shock. "We've both worked at that company forever but he always cared more about rising the ranks than me. I'm content with my place and the money I make."
"This is your older brother? Xavier? The 35 year old one?" I questioned in stunned shock. Atticus laughed.
"I only have one brother, sweetie, but yes, that's him. Three years older than me and he never lets me forget. Or our younger sister." He let me go finally and gestured toward our room. "I know you are gonna be picking out an outfit until tomorrow, so you better get started." I narrowed my eyes slightly at his teasing tone, but he wasn't far off. I needed to make a good first impression. "You'll be fine. He'll love you. Not as much as I do, but enough." He reached out and took my cheeks in his hands.
"I am gonna owe you big for this," I said, and he grinned. He leaned forward to my ear.
"Enough for my special request?" I blushed instantly at the mention of that and he chuckled.
"Yes." I decided at that moment and his eyes went wide. "I mean it. I'll dress up for you as a thank you." I had never done that sort of thing before and found it kind of embarrassing. He had given me several options and I had looked into the costumes but had never had the guts to go through with it. He kissed me suddenly and I melted into it.
"Kifa, I love you." He confessed and I smiled.
"I love you too."
