Delphine pov
My breaths came hard and fast, his hands roaming over me like he already knew every inch. When he pressed his lips to my neck, I felt it in my bones. Damn, he knew what he was doing. His hands found my boobs, giving a squeeze that nearly made my legs give out. My fingers were already tangled around his neck, pulling him closer, and just as his fingers hooked under the waistband of my panties, I caught his wrist.
“Easy there, Mr. Alpha,” I murmured, flashing a smirk.
He only chuckled, that knowing smile driving me a little wild, but I wasn’t going to let him have the satisfaction. I straightened out my clothes, trying to catch my breath and cool down. In the back of my mind, my wolf Ash was practically doing somersaults.
*Definitely as planned* , she chirped, sounding way too pleased.
*Told you to trust me,* I shot back and head back to the main hall.
Ash’s tone softened, curious. *There’s something about him. I can feel it.*
*What do you mean?* I asked, a little thrown. Ash was never this mysterious.
*I can’t feel his wolf. There’s a connection, but it’s… empty. Like something’s blocking it. You’ll have to shift in front of him sometime, make him do the same. Maybe then I’ll get through.*
*And how do you expect me to just make that happen?*
Ash’s laugh echoed in my mind. *I thought you told me to trust you.*
I rolled my eyes but felt the grin slip onto my face. *Touché*.
The hall was thinning out as I walked, wolves starting to head out, waiters busy clearing plates and glasses. The vibe was relaxed… until I spotted Jeffrey across the room, his eyes fixed on me. The look he was giving me was nothing short of a death glare. It was one thing to ignore me, which he’d been doing all night, but this? This was straight-up hostile.
I matched his frown with one of my own, desperate to push through the double doors and head outside. But before I could make it, his hand clamped down on my arm, yanking me back.
“What do you think you’re doing, Del?” His voice was tight, his gaze intense.
I shifted my expression from a frown to pure irritation. “What are you talking about?”
“Don’t act clueless. You know exactly what I’m talking about.” His tone was laced with frustration, almost a little desperate.
“Jeffrey, I really don’t know, and I don’t care.” I pulled my arm free. “Can you just leave me alone? You’ve been ignoring me since I got back, so why stop now?”
“Ignore y— You know what?” He threw his hands up in exasperation, his voice growing louder. “Don’t try to change the subject. I can smell him all over you.”
I let out a small laugh. “And why is that any of your business, Jeffrey?”
“Because he’s my brother, Del!” He looked at me, eyes hard, as if that explained everything.
I tilted my head, waiting for him to continue.
“Look,” he said, his voice dropping, “I know I don’t have the right to say this, but Japhet isn’t good for you. He’ll play with your heart, use you. He’s not the one you should be getting involved with.”
“Thank the goddess you realize you’re not in any position to tell me who’s right for me.” I shook his hand off and turned to leave, but Jeffrey blocked my path, not ready to let this go. Just then, Isabelle strutted over, her friends Lily and Jane trailing behind her, all of them chewing gum with that smug look Isabelle always had. “What’s going on, Jeffrey?” she asked, her voice dripping with fake concern. “Is she bothering you?”
I rolled my eyes, turning back to Jeffrey. “Excuse me,” I muttered, trying to step past him.
“Let me have my men take you home,” he insisted, his voice low but tense.
“I don’t need your men to take me anywhere.”
Isabelle’s face twisted with irritation. “What’s wrong with you, Jeff?” She’d even stopped chewing her gum, her anger plain now. Her friends were trying to stifle their laughter, snickering behind her back, and the look on her face told me she felt every bit of their mockery.
Just then, Japhet appeared, glancing between us with a questioning look. “What’s going on here? Is everything alright?” His Beta was trailing him, holding up some paperwork, trying to get Japhet’s attention.
“Not now, please.” Japhet waved the Beta off, his gaze fixed on us, waiting.
“Everything’s fine, brother,” Jeffrey replied, his tone clipped.
Japhet nodded, dismissing the tension with a quick glance before turning towards the exit. Just as he was stepping out, he paused, looked back, and said, “Delphine, come with me.”
Without a second thought, I followed. Outside, he led me to a sleek black Rolls-Royce, one of the most luxurious cars I’d ever seen, and opened the passenger door with a charming smile. “Get in.”
I slid into the seat, glancing back to see Jeffrey watching us, his expression dark and brooding. Japhet noticed the direction of my gaze and smirked, unfazed. “Something wrong?” he asked, glancing back at his brother before slipping into the driver’s seat.
We pulled away, and my head started to spin. The subtle, intoxicating scent of his cologne filled the car, sending my thoughts back to those moments we’d shared earlier. I bit my lip, and just as I realized he was watching me, I quickly looked out the window, trying to get my head back on straight.
He chuckled. “I heard you’re a nurse?”
“Doing your research, are you?” I teased, raising a brow.
He shrugged, a grin playing on his lips. “It’s not a secret. It came up in conversation tonight.”
Before I knew it, we were pulling up to my house. When we came to a stop, Japhet got out, circled the car, and opened my door, his hand extended to help me out. I took it, feeling the warmth of his skin under mine. “Didn’t expect the Alpha to be such a gentleman,” I murmured, surprised.
He paused, his gaze flickering with something almost…vulnerable. “I wish I was.” His answer left me a little stunned.
Then he straightened, all smooth confidence again. “Be ready tomorrow. I’ll send someone to pick you up for dinner. How about that?”
A grin tugged at my lips. “Sounds good. It’s a date, then?”
“Definitely,” he replied, that same smile returning as he slid back into the car. He gave a final wave before driving off, leaving me standing there, head spinning.
I couldn’t help but smile, the memory of his touch lingering, and I found myself wishing he’d leaned in and kissed me again before leaving.
