He went in and took a different direction into the small café as he approached a table, wiping the
sweat from his palms on his
slacks.
His earlier encounter with the woman in white had been a strange misstep, but he was ready to throw it aside and focus on his date.
"About time." his blind date snapped before he even reached
the chair.
Jacob looked up to find a woman lingering at him. Her sharp features were perfectly accentuated by her designer outfit, but the look of disdain on her face immediately set him on edge. He felt like running away.
"You're twenty minutes late," she continued, crossing her arms. "Do you know how ridiculous I looked, sitting here alone while people stared at me?"
"L apologize," Jacob said evenly, lowering himself into the chair. "1got held up." He said in a small voice.
"Held up" she repeated mockingly, narrowing her eyes.
"What could possibly be so important? Let me guess-one of your patients?" She practically
spat the word, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
Jacob straightened, refusing to let her get under his skin.
"Actually, yes. It was."
Her laughter was sharp and humorless,
"Unbelievable. A gynecology nurse. My friends said you were a joke, but I gave you a chance." She said, rolling her eyes.
"That's kind of you" Jacob replied, his tone calm despite the heat rising in his chest.
"Kind?" she said, her voice rising." You should be grateful someone like me even agreed to meet you.
Do you know what I gave up for this? A gala. With real men."
And what was he? A dragon?
He wanted to spat that out but held himself.
Jacob said nothing, letting her words hang in the air. He wasn't about to defend himself to someone who clearly wasn't interested in hearing it.
"Do you even realize how embarrassing it is to tell people?
What do you do? A man... helping women with that ?" She rolled her eyes. "What kind of man even chooses a job like that?"
Jacob had had enough. Rising from his seat, he said, "This was a mistake."
"Oh, don't worry" she snapped, grabbing her glass of water. "It absolutely was." With that, she
Flung the water at him, drenching his shirt and part of his face.
The café fell silent. So quiet, just like it happens in movies.
Jacob didn't flinch, standing there as cold water dripped on the floor. He exhaled and gently wiped his face with his handkerchief and stared at her.
"Feel better?" he asked quietly.
"Much," she said with a smirk, grabbing her bag and storming out.
Jacob watched her go, exhaling a slow breath. "Well," he mutteredto himself, grabbing a napkin todab at his shirt, "so much for a relationship."
The evening air was cool as Jacob left the café, but his
frustration was really biting him, and he tried to act like all this got nothing on him, but it did.
He was just halfway to his car when he heard some noise across the street.
Two men were standing far too close to a woman, their aggressive stances unmistakable.
And then Jacob recognized her-the woman in white.
"No need to be shy" one of the men was saying, his voice low and threatening. "We just want to
talk."
"I said leave me alone" the woman replied, her voice steady despite the tension in her body.
Jacob didn't think twice. "Hey!" He yelled, striding across the street.
The men turned toward him, their expressions hardening. "What do you want?" one of them snarled.
"Step away' Jacob said, his voice firm.
The second man sneered. "And if we don't?"
Jacob moved before they could. A quick step forward, a firm grip on the first man's wrist, and a twist
sent him reeling backward with a cry of pain.
The second man swung at him with a shaky fist, but Jacob dodged and sent a sharp jab into his ribs.
The fight wasn't up to five minutes. Both men staggered away, cursing under their breath.
He made sure he gave them the beating of his life, watching them scamper off before turning to the woman.
"Are you okay ?" he asked, his voice low and soft, staring at her.
She nodded, her eyes wide. "Yes. Thanks to you."
He smiled faintly, brushing his damp hands on his pants. "Glad I
could help."
"You didn't have to step in." she said, her gaze steady.
"Didn't seem like you wanted their company," Jacob replied.
with a shrug.
She studied him for a moment, her lips curving into a small smile.
"You're an interesting man, Jacob."
"How did you know my name?" He asked, blinking.
"You introduced yourself earlier,"she reminded him. "Before you realized I wasn't your date."
Jacob chuckled softly. "Right."
There was a pause before she said, "I'd like to repay you. Are you looking for a job? I could help you get a position at one of the best companies in the city."
Jacob shook his head. "I appreciate the offer, but I'm happy where I am."
She raised an eyebrow, stunned." Really? You don't want a change of environment?"
"No, ma'am." He replied with a smile." I love my current job."
She seemed taken aback by his response but quickly masked her
surprise.
"How about money, then? A token of gratitude."
"Not necessary," Jacob said firmly. Her expression softened, and she
extended her hand.
"Celine."
"Jacob" he replied, shaking her.
hand.
As they parted ways, Celine pulled out her phone. "I need a full
background check on someone,"she said to her assistant.
"Name's Jacob. Find out everything you can."
Jacob returned to his apartment, shaking his head at the events of
the evening. He was grateful for the quiet as he unlocked the door.
and stepped inside.
But his relief was short-lived.
"There you are," a familiar voice cooed. Jacob froze, turning to find his blind date lounging on his couch,
her arms crossed and a smug smile on her face, looking like she had stepped out from a spell book.
" What's happening here? What are you doing in my house?" He demanded.
"Why are you acting like you lost your tooth?" she said, waving a hand. "I figured we
got off on the wrong foot, so I thought I'd give you a second chance."
He stared at her, his patience already stretched thin. "How did you get in here?"
"That's not important" she said, standing up. "What's important is that I'm giving you an o
opportunity to make things right. Do you know how many men would kill for my attention?"
Jacob pinched the bridge of his
nose. "I'm not one of them."
Her smile faltered. "Excuse me?" You should leave" Jacob said, his tone leaving no room for
argument.
