Katie stared at Heather as she angrily slapped cheese slices on buttered bread. “You can’t talk to me like that.” “Why not, Mom?” “Because I’m your mother, and I deserve more respect than that.” Her own anger rose, but she worked to tamp it down. The past couple of weeks had been difficult to say the least, with Heather upset that Katie had broken up with Theo, and then with learning that now that her painting was finished, she’d have to go back outside and do the sports in her after-care club.
