I finished putting away the supplies we had bought, ensuring everything was in its proper place before heaving a sigh of relief. The cabin was stocked, ready, and organized—just the way it needed to be if we were going to survive in it for the next few days, months, or however long it took before we felt safe enough to leave.
I plopped down on the couch and took a deep breath. With Jessica freshening up in the bedroom and me now done with organizing, I finally had a moment alone to process the exhaustion seeping into my bones. I could no longer block out the stress of the journey. It had finally caught up with me, and for the first time since the fight at the motel, I allowed myself to reflect on everything that had happened.
