~ JESSICA ~ The tension in the truck was palpable as Jack drove us toward Harbor Island. We had four more days to reach the cabin, and I already felt exhausted because my evening sickness had reappeared with a vengeance. My eyes strayed to the dashboard, and I noted through the small clock hanging there that it was a few minutes past five p.m. We’d been on the road for over six hours, and during that time, we’d had to stop about three times for me to throw up. It was surprising that a three-week-old pregnancy could wreak such havoc on my body, but the hormonal changes were relentless, and I felt like a puppet on strings, yanked around by nausea and fatigue. I felt so tired and exhausted that all I wanted was to soak in a hot tub, have a hot meal afterward, and sleep on soft, clean sheet
