Sofia's POV
I listened carefully to the auction and tried to keep up with the man. I need to know who is buying them. It feels important. Amanda is up first. The sickly man from earlier is competing with a hairy man with a big mustache. His stomach is big, doughy, and hanging over the hem of his pants peeking out from underneath his stained shirt. I can't see his eyes, they are hidden under bushy eyebrows. Still, he feels more human than the other man. The other looks like some wannabe vampire.
"I knew Manfred would want one, he always pays well!" Hugo mumbles, rubbing his hands and pulling me close, then rubbing my hips.
Manfred? Which one of them is it? The auctioneer hollers 'sold' pointing to the wannabe vampire making me feel sick to my stomach. Mia is sold to the cloaked women. The young one that looked at me before is looking at me again. She has a small, but pretty face, big doe eyes and I think her hair is red under that hood. We make eye contact, she smiles slightly and nods. I frown at her. An old gray man buys Rose and Ruth. At least they are together. When it's Olivia's turn the bear growls, I would describe it as sounds protective? It's not the same way as Hugo growls. She just keeps humming for him and cuddling him through the bars. Arthur surprised me and bought her, earning him another growl from River. He walks up to the auctioneer on the stage and collects some paper like the other buyers have done. He then whispers something in the man's ear. The round little man just laughs and scratches something on his papers. Then he gets right back to his work. When Arthur comes back he grins at Hugo.
"Change your mind? You aren't getting soft, are you?" Hugo asked.
"Oh no! Don't you see? This is a great opportunity! I'm gonna breed them and sell the cubs. It's an investment and will keep the family happy! If it all goes well, I might buy myself a second wife next time!" he winks at Hugo who is laughing like a maniac. "Well, good luck my friend!" he said and then ordered Tobias to bring Olivia out with her hands bound together. Arthur ties her to the wagon he pulled before. He walks into a half sedated River that still only focuses on Olivia.
"Behave, and you will be rewarded. Misbehave, and she will pay the price!" he warned. These people are crazy. He is talking to an animal expecting him to understand. I just looked at Oliva and murmured bye. She gives me a sad smile and a waving with her fingers. The rest of the buyers come to collect, Hugo exchanges courtesies with them all. Manfred first, then The old gray-looking one is Oscar. He doesn't seem to like Hugo, and that's fine by me but a bit hypocritical. I look at my sisters disappearing in front of me. The despair comes back in waves, it's like buckets of cold water are thrown over me one by one. When they come for Mia I'm crying. Silent tears rolled down my cheek. It's the young girl with a male this time. "Atra Aurora, thank you for your services." the man says to Hugo before taking Mia away. Atra Aurora? What's that? How do I know who took her now? Hugo orders Tobias to bring me back to the truck. He looks me in my eyes, frowns, and grabs my neck pulling my hair.
"Stop crying, it's not pretty." He scowls and then pushes me away giving me a disgusted look. "We are going home." He announces and walks off. Tobias sighs and takes me by my arm and leads The way. When we are out of sight back in The corridor I breathe slowly in an attempt to calm myself. Tobias' hand sneaks down my arm and grabs me by my hand. Our fingers intertwine, and he gives me a reshoring squeeze. With my sisters gone, he's all I have left.
Out on The loading docks, I see Arthur shoving Olivia in a horse transport pulled by a big jeep. Tobias brings me to our truck and takes me to the driver's cabin. He places me on the bed and stands beside me, holding my hand.
"I promise you, I will tell you more, I will tell you everything! But you have to wait until we are home, okay? It has to be in secret. Hugo can't know, do you understand?" He whispers while drawing small circles on the back of my hand. I just nod, afraid my voice will give in. Tobias squeezed my hand again and then let it go. Stepping away and walking out the back to close the backlash. The door on the driver's side opens, and Hugo climbs in. He sits in the driver's seat and starts the truck. So, we are going home? I don't think it's my old home they mean. I lay down on the bed feeling forlorn and repeating the buyers' names to myself. Manfred the 'vamp guy', Oscar the gray, the 'Atra Aurora' women, and Arthur with the bear. I let the truck rock me to sleep like before with the buyer's name echoing in my head.
It takes us two more days until we reach 'home'. It's a campsite, in the middle of nowhere. It's cute and looks like a mini town. At the entrance, there is a reception, a convenience store, and a shower house with toilets at the back. Rolling down the narrow roads we passed a big playground with a small house by the side. We passed caravans, tents, motorhomes, and different housing solutions. Everywhere I see people of all ages. We drove down to the edge of the campsite. Down by the lake, there are some permanently placed caravans. They look like mini houses with a front porch. They all have this faded soft yellow color. They have more space between them than on the rest of the campsite. The sun is setting when Hugo parks the truck beside one of the small houses. It's right by the edge of the lake. Everything here is so quiet. He grabs me by the arm and drags me to the house. He opens the front door and pushes me inside. Without closing the door he presses me up against the wall at the entry pulling my dress up. I'm still without underwear. He grabs me between my legs and breathes heavily in my ear.
"This is the best part, we have to inaugurate every part of this house!"
With one hand he makes quick work of his pants and then grabs me by my throat and lifts me up. I put my legs around him trying to hold myself up gasping for air. He grabs my ass holding me in place and enters me. With his hand he squeezes my throat, he is suffocating all sounds while he pumps into me, hard. My back slams against the wall. I grab his arms trying to pull him off me, I need air. Through blurry eyes I see his stone-cold eyes studying my face.
"Welcome home." He whispers before speeding up, holding me tight.
Tobias POV
We have been home for three minutes. And he is at it again. I need to make sure she has pills. The morning-after pill will not work in the long run. The sound of her body against the wall makes my skin crawl. I hide in the truck, packing our stuff. The backpack with the other girl's clothes is thrown in a corner so I just leave it. The hay still smells of them, but their scent will fade with time. I sigh. When I leave the truck I lock it and carry our stuff inside. Our living room is combined with the kitchen. It's one open space. The sofa bed and tv take up most of the living room. The walls are empty except for stains and two badly covered holes. In the kitchen, there's a door into the only bedroom. It's Hugo's room. I sleep in the truck or on the sofa bed. Next to the kitchen is a corridor that leads to a small bathroom with a toilet and shower. In the corridor, there is a backdoor out to the lake. Hugo sits on the sofa bed with Sofia in boxers and a t-shirt. He stares at the TV. She looks uncomfortable under his arm. her whole body is shaking visibly and it's hard to describe her appearance. I put down the bags and rub my face.
"We are out of food, I'll go to the store!" I murmured. I would like to bring Sofia but people will smell that she is human. And she doesn't look too good right now. She is bruised around her neck and throat. Her face is swollen and she smells like blood again. Hugo grunts with his eyes glued to the tv screen. He pulls her closer and puts her hand on him.
"Buy something strong from Henry, and keep away. You sleep in the truck tonight. We need some alone time! Don't we, my pretty pet?" Hugo rubs himself with Sofia's hand still not looking at me. I just walked off.
Hugo is an arse, Henry is River's father. And even if he is a drunk and never cared about his children they still live here. What am I supposed to say to Lucas, River's older brother? The Browns are werebears and good people. I rub my face again and hope I don't run into them today. Henry's house looks like ours. It's exactly the same. Henry sits on the porch asleep. Maybe I should go to the store first? I walk past Henry and go to the camp's center.
This campsite is a safe haven for supernaturals. Founded by our country's most northern pack. Wolfs live in packs. It's our nature. Some live alone and are defined as rogues. A weird definition. Yes, some are thrown out due to bad behavior or crimes. But some chose the lifestyle and some, like me, are born into it without a choice. Loners would be a more correct term. The 'New moon', is the only pack, that I know of, that tries to help. This camp is a safe place for those who need it, it's mostly families with children and old people. All are not wolves. But most are. Bears are the second biggest group and then there are one or two witches. River once told me there were mermaids in the lake. But I don't know. A group of kids is playing at the playground. The evening is still warm. We are not north of the arctic circle so we don't have the midnight sun but we are close. I stroll slowly, not in a hurry to go back. Seth is furious and walking slowly helps me keep in control. In the shop, I grab Milk, bread, and a couple of other stuff. Not really paying attention to anything, battling with myself about our hopeless situation.
"Tobias darling, welcome back! How was the trip?" Mrs. Blomberg the old lady said with a soft voice. She is this typical old woman. Friendly, she knows everything and everyone. She is 'New moon' but lives here and is the shopkeeper. Her daughter is a teacher, I think.
"Hi Mrs. B, it was fine I guess! Not like home though."
"Oh, sweet boy!" She blushes, waving me off with her tiny hand "Have you heard about River? Laura is worried sick. He is missing…" she whispers the last part.
"No, I didn't know. Isn't he just up for the summer gathering? It's tradition isn't it?" I can't look her in the eyes and rub my face with both hands.
"No, he would never leave without saying so. And Laura said he had given up on finding his mate, so there was no reason to go!" Oh if she only knew. I wish I could say something. But how would I explain it? Oh you know Mrs. B, River is taken by a dealer named Arthur. He found his mate and is being forced to breed cubs for a living. But look at it from the bright side, he avoided being sold himself… no, I can’t say that!
"I'm sorry to hear that, I will keep my eyes open! Tell Laura I'll let her know if I hear anything!" Is all I say before I leave to walk back. Pathetic.
