The night was chaos…total chaos
Rain slammed against the windshield as they drove leaving the city behind them, neon lights and sirens in the distance. Dante’s grip on the steering wheel was hard enough to make the leather groan.
She was quiet beside him. Too quiet.
Elena Vale…auction prize, debt payment, problem he never meant to want sat rigid in the passenger seat, her eyes locked on the storm ahead. The faint light from the dashboard painted her in blue, her wet hair clinging to her cheeks.
He could still feel what he sensed as fear in her silence. And the defiance. Always that damn defiance of hers.
“Where are we going?” she asked finally, voice barely audible over the hum of the tires and the sound of rain.
“Somewhere safe,” he said.
She gave a dry laugh, one void of any joy or humor “From what? You?”
He didn’t answer. Because yes…partly from him. But mostly from the people who would happily carve her open for the name she carried and her affiliation to him.
He’d underestimated how deep her father’s debts went. Too many sharks still circling the Vale name. The auction had only painted a bigger target on her back and by extension, on him.
A dark SUV flashed in the rearview mirror. Headlights. Too close. He could tell they were coming for them.
“Buckle up,” Dante muttered.
“What…” Elena started,
The words barely left her lips before he swerved sharply, cutting into a narrow side street. Tires screeched. The SUV followed, tailing closely behind them.
Elena gasped, one hand gripping the dashboard. “Who are they?” She asked turning to look, she could barely amen out the faces behind the windshield, the headlights shone brightly blinding her
“People who think they can take what’s mine.”
He said it without thinking. But the word mine rolled out of him like a promise and a threat.
Bullets shattered the back window. Elena screamed, ducking with her hands clasped over her ears. Dante yanked the wheel again, his pulse hammering. He drove like a ghost, fast, fluid, merciless…until the city lights thinned into the dark stretch of the countryside.
When he finally stopped, the car was steaming, silence broken only by her ragged breathing.
Elena turned to him, eyes wide open with both fear and anger, but mostly anger “You…you almost got us killed.”
“They would’ve done worse, trust me” he snapped. Then softer, when he saw her expression “Are you hurt?”
Her chest rose and fell. She shook her head. “No… I don’t think so.”
He reached over, fingers brushing her shoulder, then her jaw checking for blood. He could feel her tense up, She froze but didn’t pull away. Her skin was cold. Fragile.
“Don’t look at me like that,” she whispered.
“Like what?”
“Like you care.”
His hand stilled. Did he care?
He should’ve said he didn’t. Should’ve reminded her what she was, collateral, leverage. But instead, he said nothing. The silence said everything.
They drove again slower this time. A long stretch of wet road led to the hills beyond the city. He pulled into a private building tucked between trees and darkness, far from anyone who could find them.
When they stepped inside, Elena looked around warily concrete walls, stone fireplace, the quiet hum of rain on the roof.
“Where are we?” she asked.
“Off the grid.”
“And what am I now?” she murmured. “A prisoner in another cage? Great” she said sarcastically
Dante’s jaw flexed. “You’re alive. That’s enough for tonight.” She was beginning to get to him.
He turned to pour himself a drink, but her voice stopped him again.
“Why are you trying to save me?”
He looked over his shoulder. She stood there barefoot, drenched, trembling, but unbroken. Her eyes burned through him, demanding truth.
And for the first time, he didn’t have an answer that made sense.
Before he could respond, his phone buzzed on the counter. An encrypted call his man, Luca.
“Talk.”
“Boss… we found something,” Luca said, voice tight. “It’s about her father’s debt. Someone paid part of it. Recently.”
Dante’s brows drew together. “Impossible. He’s dead.”
“That’s the thing,” Luca said. “The payment was made under her name… Elena Vale.”
Dante turned slowly, eyes locking with hers. She was still watching him, too still, too calm.
“Care to explain,” he said, voice low, “why you’ve been paying off your father’s debt to the same people trying to kill you?”
Elena’s breath caught. Her eyes flickered, the truth unraveling too fast to hide.
“I…” The lights cut out. Glass shattered from the back of the building. And before Dante could reach her, a shadow moved behind her a gun pressed to her throat.
“Guess she’s worth more alive after all,” a familiar voice sneered from the dark. Dante’s blood went cold. It was one of his own men.
Elena felt it before she truly saw it, cold nose of metal aimed straight at her head. One of his men stood barely three feet away, jaw clenched, finger resting too comfortably on the trigger.
“Don’t move,” the guard said. “Either of you.”
The room felt wrong. Too quiet. Too controlled. The kind of stillness that came before blood.
Dante didn’t raise his hands. He smiled instead. It was slow and sharp, the kind of smile that had ended men before they realized they were already dead.
“You picked the wrong night to betray me,” Dante said calmly.
The guard’s eyes flicked…not to Elena, but behind Dante. That was when she saw them.More men emerged from the shadows. Armed. Familiar faces. Dante’s crest still pinned to their jackets like a sick joke. They were Surrounded.
Elena’s heartbeat drummed Hard in her chest as adrenaline pumped through her. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Not like this. Not with Dante standing right there.
One of the men lunged and Instinct took over.
Dante moved first, fast and lethal. He twisted, knocked the gun aside, drove his elbow into the traitor’s throat. Bone cracked. The man collapsed.
Gunfire erupted. Glass shattered. Someone screamed. Elena reacted without thinking.
She ducked as a bullet tore through the air, grabbed the nearest man’s wrist, twisted sharply and slammed him into the wall. He went down with a choking gasp.
Too easy. Her body flowed through the chaos like it remembered something her mind hadn’t approved….kick….turn…strike delivered with precision that came from muscle memory, not fear.
She stopped mid-motion. Dante shot another man, spinning smoothly, eyes blazing. He was everywhere at once, he controlled violence.
And then he looked at her.
Really looked.
Elena felt it…the moment his gaze sharpened, the flicker of calculation behind his eyes, like he was trying to understand all she just did.
She’d moved wrong. Too fast. Too clean. Too sure. This wasn’t how a frightened girl fought. Her chest tightened….You’re blowing your cover, she told herself.
Another man charged. She disarmed him on instinct, twisting his arm and slamming him to the ground. The movement was flawless.
Deadly.
Dante stared even harder.
The room fell into a brief uncomfortable silence. Bodies littered the floor. Blood streaked the marble.
Elena’s breath came steady, too steady. She should Be the scared young girl. She saw the question forming in Dante’s eyes.
Who are you?
Footsteps thundered from the hallway.
More men.
Not Dante’s.
The air shifted. These ones moved differently. Purposeful and too Organized. Elena knew that sound.
Dante reached for her. “Stay behind me.”
She didn’t move. If she stayed, she’d have to keep fighting. If she kept fighting, her mask would shatter completely.
And once Dante Cross saw what she really was, there would be no going back. No pretending. No weakness. No safety. She made her decision in a single breath. So When rough hands grabbed her arms, she let them.
Dante shouted her name.
She turned just enough to look at him eyes wide, lips parted, fear carefully placed like a costume she knew by heart, she’s a good actress.
“Dante…”she cried as they dragged her away, while he fought to get to her.
…
Dante stood frozen in the wreckage.Blood. Broken glass. Dead men who had sworn loyalty.
And Elena gone.
His chest felt hollow, tight, like something vital had been torn loose. It didn’t make sense.None of it did.
He replayed the fight in his mind again and again the way she moved, the precision, the control… and then the way she’d suddenly stopped.
Why stop?
Why let them take her?
Dante stared at the blood streaked floor, unease in his gut.
Elena Vale wasn’t what she pretended to be.
And whatever she was hiding might be far more dangerous than anyone chasing her. He’d find out who and what she really is,but first he needed to save this woman who was slowly getting under his skin.
