Hello sweeties! ⎛⎝ ≽ > ⩊ Rain's POV,
"Wear this," Wren ordered, tossing a soft, sage-green casual dress and an oversized knit cardigan onto my lap. "It's comfortable, it covers you up so you won't feel exposed, and it actually matches your eyes."
I smiled softly, grateful for her unspoken understanding. Wren knew I hated tight clothes, hated being noticed, and absolutely despised being touched by anyone who wasn't my parents, her, or Falcon. She always picked clothes that felt like protective armor and cute at the same time.
Once I was dressed and Wren had brushed out my thick, dark hair, we headed downstairs. We piled into Wren’s car. Since Falcon and I both still didn't have our driving licenses, and I had absolutely zero interest in learning how to drive anyway, Wren was our permanent chauffeur. The drive was filled with Falcon and Wren bickering over the radio, while I leaned my head against the cool glass of the window, watching the island scenery blur past.
Eventually, we pulled up to a beautiful restaurant nestled right on the edge of the coast. It was hosting a local community gathering mixed with a school fundraiser, and the place was already buzzing with people. Just looking at the crowd made a knot of anxiety tighten in my stomach. I did not want to be here. I hated the noise, the forced socialization, the eyes. But no one on this island could ever say no to Wren when she had her mind made up. I had tagged along purely because I could not bear to disappoint her.
As they drifted toward the center of the party, laughing and greeting familiar faces, I deliberately stepped back, anchoring myself against a wooden railing that overlooked the ocean.
Here, away from the chatter, it was beautiful. The sea stretched out into infinity, the deep blue waves crashing rhythmically against the rocks below. The sun was beginning its slow descent, painting the sky in shades of gold and violet. A beautiful creation of God, I thought to myself, letting the cool sea breeze wash over my face, soothing my frayed nerves. I could stay right here all night, completely occupied by the ocean.
"Hey! Rain, right? Wow, it's been a while."
The voice shattered my peaceful bubble. I stiffened slightly, turning my head. A boy around my age was standing a few feet away, holding a soda and smiling at me. He looked at me with an easy, casual familiarity, like we had known each other since childhood.
My mind went completely blank. I stared at his face, desperately searching my memory bank, but nothing clicked. A wave of embarrassment washed over me. I did not want to be rude, but I had absolutely no idea who he was.
Trying to act completely nonchalant, I gave a small, distant nod and cleared my throat. "Oh, hey. Yeah. Um... Dave, right?" I offered, guessing a generic name, trying to deflect. "Did we... do we have any big exams coming up next week?"
The boy blinked, his smile faltering into a look of sheer disbelief. He let out a breathless, slightly offended laugh. "Dave? Seriously, Rain? I'm Nathan. We've sat next to each other in homeroom for the last two years. Did you actually forget my name?"
My cheeks burned with a sudden, furious blush. "Oh! Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry," I stammered, genuinely mortified, my voice dropping to a shy whisper. "It... it completely slipped my mind. I'm really bad with names," I stammered. I didn't even know what in the world I was blabbering about. Way to try and act nonchalant while completely making a fool of myself that excuse wasn't even believable in this case, even though it was entirely true.
Nathan sighed, but the annoyance faded, replaced by a strange, nervous energy. He stepped a bit closer, shifting his weight from foot to foot. I subtly took a half-step back, ensuring my back was pressed against the wooden railing, keeping a safe distance between us.
"It's fine," Nathan said, rubbing the back of his neck. He looked down at his shoes, then looked back up, his eyes suddenly intense. "Honestly, it's kind of fitting. You're always so quiet, Rain. You're like a ghost in school. But... I've been watching you for a really long time. Ever since freshman year, actually. I think you're amazing, and you're really beautiful. I was wondering... if maybe you'd want to go out with me sometime? Like a date?"
Inside, my heart began to hammer against my ribs. A surge of panic and raw nervousness flared up. A confession? Right here? My introverted soul wanted to pull my cardigan over my head and vanish into thin air. I hated this kind of attention.
I remained silent for a few seconds.
"Nathan," I said softly, forcing my voice to remain calm despite the sudden panic fluttering in my chest. "Thank you. That's... that's really kind of you to say. But you're a really nice guy, Nathan. You're definitely going to find a beautiful girl out there. I'm not even that beautiful, or... or worthy of that kind of attention. I'm really thankful that you thought of me, but I'm just not interested in dating anyone. I'm so sorry—"
"No, Rain, wait," Nathan interjected, his rejection clearly stinging. Instead of walking away, a strange, desperate look crossed his face. He stepped forward, closing the distance between us far too quickly. "You are beautiful. You just don't see it because you're always hiding. Just give me one chance."
Before I could register his movement, his fingers wrapped tightly around my wrist.
A jolt of pure shock ran through my system. My skin crawled at the sudden, unwanted contact. Hated being touched. The rule screamed in my head, and panic flared hot and sharp in my throat.
"Nathan, please," I stammered, my quiet composure fracturing as I started squirming, pulling backward to try and wrench my hand out of his grip. His fingers only tightened. "You really don't have to do this. Please let go. You'll find an amazing girl who will actually be worthy of your care, someone who will... who will actually care about your feelings. But it isn't me. Please."
"Rain, just listen to me for a second!" Nathan persisted, his voice growing tough and laced with a sudden, suffocating desperation. He begged, stepping even closer, completely ignoring how hard I was trying to pull away. "I've liked you for years. How do you know we won't work if you don't even try?"
"Because she already gave you her answer."
The deep, chillingly calm voice cut through the air from behind me.
In the next heartbeat, a large, familiar hand clamped down firmly onto Nathan's wrist. Falcon stepped out from the shadows of the deck, his jaw set and his eyes completely dark as he stared Nathan down. With an effortless, unyielding pressure, Falcon squeezed Nathan's wrist, forcing his fingers to loosen and snap open.
I instantly snatched my hand back, tucking it against my chest, trembling slightly as I stepped completely behind Falcon’s broad shoulder. Falcon did not let go of Nathan's wrist right away. He kept his grip firm, leaning in just enough to make his presence entirely unavoidable.
"Look, I know you're a nice guy, Nathan," Falcon said, his voice deceptively quiet but carrying a dangerous edge. "But try to read the room. When someone is clearly this uncomfortable," he shifted his eyes meaningfully back toward me, acknowledging how hard I had been trying to break free—" And trying her absolute best to get out of your grip, you should understand."
Nathan swallowed hard, his tough demeanor completely evaporating under Falcon's stare. He tried to pull his hand back, but Falcon held him in place for one lingering, heavy second.
"And more importantly," Falcon added, his tone dropping an octave, leaving absolutely no room for argument, "if she said no, then don't force it upon her. Walk away."
