CHAPTER TWO — THE GIRL WITH THE MATE MARK
Clare sat at the edge of her bed that night, staring at the wall in silence. She hadn’t changed out of her clothes. She hadn’t eaten. She hadn’t done anything except replay the same moment again and again.
“Tatum returned home, but he wasn’t alone. He brought his mate.Pregnant.”
Every time she thought she was done crying, more tears spilled over.
She pressed her hands against her face, trying to hold herself together. She had known this day could come. She and Tatum had talked about it many times. They had chosen each other despite not being fated. They had promised that mates wouldn’t matter.
But promises meant nothing against the power of a bond.
Clare felt like a fool for believing love was strong enough.
A soft knock sounded on her door.
“Clare?” Jasmine’s voice.
Clare cleared her throat, though it didn’t help much. “Come in.”
Jasmine stepped inside, closing the door behind her. She walked straight to Clare, sat beside her, and placed an arm around her shoulders.
“I’m so sorry,” Jasmine whispered.
Clare leaned her head on Jasmine’s shoulder. “I don’t even know how to feel.”
“You’re allowed to feel everything,” Jasmine said. “Anger. Sadness. Confusion. All of it.”
Clare’s throat tightened. “He marked her, Jasmine. He marked her. And she’s pregnant. I… I don’t understand. How did all this happen in four months?”
Jasmine let out a slow breath. “Mate bonds move fast. Too fast sometimes.”
Clare swallowed hard. “She seems harmless.”
Jasmine’s face tightened. “She seems innocent. There’s a difference. But whatever she is, she is pregnant with the Alpha’s child. That changes everything.”
Clare closed her eyes. “I loved him so much.”
“I know.”
“And now I don’t know where I stand. I don’t even know if I have a place anymore.”
Jasmine squeezed her hand. “You are still the Luna. You are still important.”
Clare shook her head. “Not for long.”
A painful silence settled over them.
Finally, Jasmine stood. “You should rest. Tomorrow will be another long day.”
Clare nodded weakly. “Thank you.”
Jasmine brushed a strand of hair out of Clare’s face before walking to the door. “I’m right down the hall if you need me.”
When Jasmine left, Clare curled up on her bed, pulling the blankets around herself. She tried to sleep, but her mind refused to quiet.
**************
The next morning, the pack house buzzed with noise. Wolves hurried down the hall, whispering and murmuring. Clare could feel their curiosity brushing against her skin.
“The Alpha returned with his pregnant mate. What about Clare?
What happens now?”
Clare forced herself to dress and leave the room. She wouldn’t hide. She was still the Luna until Tatum said otherwise.
When she stepped into the main hall, everything grew quiet.
Every wolf watched her with mixed looks of pity, concern, awkwardness. Clare kept her chin high and walked forward.
She found Tatum in the council room, speaking softly to the healer about Elara’s condition. Elara sat nearby, wrapped in a soft blanket, her hands resting protectively over her stomach.
She looked small and delicate.
She looked like the kind of woman people felt the need to protect.
Clare hated that she noticed that.
Tatum glanced up, and guilt washed over his face instantly. “Clare. Good morning.”
Clare nodded, even though her stomach twisted. “Good morning.”
Elara smiled softly. “Luna Clare… I hope you slept okay. I know yesterday was a lot.”
Clare forced a smile. “I’m fine. Thank you.”
Elara lowered her eyes as if embarrassed. “I don’t want to cause problems between you and Tatum. If I could control the bond, I would. I’m sorry.”
She sounded sweet. Gentle. Almost too gentle.
Clare had no idea what to say.
Tatum cleared his throat. “Clare… we need to talk about living arrangements.”
There it was.
Her heart dropped.
But Tatum held up a hand quickly. “Not separation. Not rejection. I’m not pushing you out of my life.”
Clare stared at him, waiting.
Tatum let out a shaky breath. “Elara needs rest. She needs quiet. And the Alpha Wing… it’s stressful for her. All the duties, the meetings, the responsibilities… I don’t want the pressure to affect the child.”
Elara looked down, fiddling with the edge of her blanket. “I told him I don’t want to take your place, Luna. But he’s right… the stress isn’t good.”
Clare bit the inside of her cheek. She could feel the walls closing in.
“So what does that mean for me?” she asked.
Tatum hesitated. “Until I sort everything out… you should stay in the Guest Wing.”
Clare’s heart cracked, not broken, not shattered, but cracked.
Still painful.
She nodded slowly. “I understand.”
Tatum ran a hand through his hair. “I never wanted this to happen. I don’t want to hurt you.”
But he already had.
Clare gave a small, polite smile. “It’s fine. I’ll pack my things.”
Elara’s eyes flickered to Clare’s side for a brief second ,quick, sharp, almost filled with emotion before she looked away with a soft, sweet expression.
“Thank you for understanding, Luna Clare,” she whispered.
Clare excused herself before the tears returned.
***********
She moved into the Guest Wing before noon. The room wasn’t small, but it wasn’t hers. The walls felt cold and the bed felt strange.
Her whole life, she had imagined herself living in the Alpha Wing beside Tatum. Now another woman slept in the place that once belonged to her.
And that woman was pregnant with his child.
Clare unpacked silently. Jasmine entered halfway through, a troubled look in her eyes.
“I hate this,” Jasmine muttered. “I hate seeing you pushed aside.”
“I’m not pushed aside,” Clare said quietly. “Just… moved.”
Jasmine crossed her arms. “Moved is the same thing.”
Clare shook her head, trying to stay steady. “He’s confused, Jas. And Elara is pregnant. He can’t think straight.”
Jasmine frowned. “Don’t defend him.”
Clare didn’t answer.
Because she wasn’t sure she believed her own words either.
Days passed, and Clare tried to cope. But the pack was changing quickly.
Elara became the center of attention.
She always looked fragile, always looked like she might faint if someone spoke too loudly. She apologized easily, thanked everyone, smiled sweetly. She won the hearts of the pack in less than a week.
Clare watched as pack members brought her gifts, blankets, food… anything to support the mother of the future heir.
Every time the wolves praised Elara, Clare felt a little weaker.
Tatum stayed by Elara’s side constantly. He walked her through the courtyard, held her arm even though she didn’t need help, made sure she ate, slept, breathed without trouble.
He was gentle with her and Careful with her.
Clare tried not to watch, but she always did.
One afternoon, as Clare approached the training grounds to check on the warriors, she spotted Elara sitting on a bench near the field. She was alone, her hands resting on her belly, a thoughtful frown on her face.
Clare hesitated, then walked toward her.
“Elara,” she said softly.
Elara looked up quickly. She blinked, then smiled sweetly. “Luna Clare. Please, sit.”
Clare sat beside her, leaving a little space.
Elara tilted her head. “You don’t have to come see me. I know this must be awkward.”
Clare nodded slowly. “It’s… a lot, yes. But I’m trying.”
Elara sighed and looked down. “If it helps, I didn’t want to ruin your life. When Tatum saved me during the battle, the bond hit us both so fast. I fainted, and when I woke up… the mark was already there.”
Clare’s heart tightened painfully. “You fainted?”
Elara nodded. “He carried me to safety. And I just… felt the bond. Like a pull. Like something inside me knew it needed him. I didn’t want it. Not when I knew he already loved someone.”
Clare stared at her. Elara looked like she was about to cry.
“I’m sorry, Luna Clare,” she whispered. “I really am.”
Clare swallowed hard. “It’s not your fault.”
But something felt off.
The sadness in Elara’s eyes was real, but her tone was… almost too perfect. Too careful.
Clare wasn’t sure what she was sensing. Jealousy? Threat? A warning?
For a split second, Elara glanced at Clare again, her eyes narrowing very slightly.
Then, just as quickly, she looked away and smiled like nothing happened.
Clare’s stomach twisted.
She stood. “I should get going.”
Elara nodded. “Please take care.”
Clare walked away slowly, her heart pounding. She didn’t know why, but something about that conversation left her uneasy.
Elara had said all the right words.
But Clare felt like she had been quietly measured… examined… and judged.
Later that evening, Tatum found Clare near the garden.
He looked restless. His eyes were tired, and guilt clung to him like a shadow.
“Clare,” he said softly. “Can we talk?”
She steeled herself. “Of course.”
He stepped closer. “I want you to know that you still matter to me. You always have.”
Clare nodded. “I know.”
“I’m just trying to protect everyone,” Tatum continued. “Elara is… fragile. And she’s carrying my child. I can’t risk anything.”
Clare felt a sting. “Do you think I would risk her?”
Tatum hesitated. “No. I just need time. Time to understand everything. Time to figure out how to balance… all of this.”
Clare looked at him, her eyes soft but tired. “Take all the time you need, Tatum.”
He nodded, grateful.
But Clare felt the distance between them growing like a thick wall.
She wasn’t sure he noticed it.
But she did and every day, it hurt more.
One week later, the pack officially welcomed Elara as the Alpha’s mate.
Clare stood among the pack members, smiling politely while her heart cracked open all over again.
Elara stood beside Tatum, looking shy, blushing softly as wolves praised her beauty, her kindness, her innocence.
When Elara spoke, her voice trembled slightly.
“Thank you… I will do my best to support the Alpha and serve this pack with all my heart.”
Everyone clapped.
Clare clapped too, even though her hands were shaking.
Tatum didn’t look at her once.
Later that night, Clare stood alone in the courtyard. The moonlight touched her face as she stared into the forest.
She felt lost.
She felt invisible.
She felt like she no longer belonged.
She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to breathe.
But nothing eased the pain inside her chest.
Nothing prepared her for what would come next.
Because her entire life was about to change again in ways she couldn’t imagine.
