Present time
After the other day with Savio and my mother, I shut everyone off and changed my number. I didn’t need the constant barrage of calls or McKayla worrying about me. I didn’t know what my life was now. Without a father growing up, when the brother you’d looked up to suddenly became someone you’d never met, it stung like an arrow through the heart.
The flight back from New York wasn’t too bad, and I held up well without breaking down. I still hadn’t taken a call from my husband and refused anyone else from reaching out except McKayla or my mother. I parked the car and grabbed my bag out of the backseat. I slid my purse on my shoulder and talked to Nikki on the phone as I headed up to the door of my mother’s house.
