My expensive shoes met hard concrete as I moved steadily and purposefully towards the building, a coffee in hand, my phone in the other. I brought up the hot, dark and bitter liquid to my lips, finishing the rest of it in one gulp. I discarded the cup in a trash bin just as I crossed the threshold of the building’s door with graffitied corners. I stood patiently and observed one of the words that had been graffitied on. “Gangs rule.” I read with a skull sprayed on by the side. I c****d my head to the side and let out a slight huh.
Probably an overenthusiastic kid with gang dreams because he or she thought it would make them look cooler. I took off my dark shades and turned away my attention from the graffiti and pushed the door, walking inside with the walk of a man that owned the building. Yes, I did own the building. My mind drew back to the graffiti on the door. If only that kid knew that gangs were not as cool as the sounded. Well, mistakes are lessons. If they wanted to be part of a gang, that was their problem. I had other problems to worry about.
“Good morning sir.” A short woman with tattoos trailing up her arms and spiky doc martins, a white t-shirt and plaid dress pants called out and walked towards me.
“Mara.” I acknowledged as she reached me. Today her hair was dark blue and she had reshaped the corners of her hair letting just the middle part grow out and fall down the side of her head to shoulder level. Mara worked for me and she managed the establishment. She was into the legal business mostly but she was one of my best and when I needed an extra gun, she was always ready to tackle with a bit of illegal sh*t.
I was in a range. A target range. I needed to shoot something. With everything going on, my hands were itching to just release some tension and shoot something but I couldn’t exactly just go around shooting people now could I? The place was mostly empty and I met just about two people as I moved towards one of the further and more secluded ranges.
“I heard about the men Sir.” Mara said, trailing behind me. I stopped and c****d a brow at her. What was she expecting me to say? I said nothing else and continued walking. I then got one of the practice guns, loaded it. I decided not to wear the ear muffs. I had had too much experience with real guns and using them if the tucked into my belt was any indication. So, it was pointless for me. But I needed to fell that familiar thrill of shooting a gun alongside that resounding noise that ever so constantly rang in your ears after you fired one. I took off my suit jacket, placed it neatly on the table, took off my cufflinks and rolled up the sleeves of my shirt.
“They were good men.” She said grimly. I didn’t exactly agree with her. Most of those men weren’t good men, I was not a good man. But they had been loyal and they had died working for me. Granted they were paid, but there was just something about loyal men dying… I picked up the gun, set the paper range, wore the glasses and looked at Mara.
“They knew the business they were getting into. Their deaths are a loss but there is no point crying about it.” I said coldly, then aimed and fired three shots in a row.
] She must have left at some point because when I turned to look at where she had been standing, she was not there anymore. Good. She had business to do anyways. I turned to the range and reloaded, firing in succession. By the time the second round of bullets finished, there was that familiar vibration in my hand and a gaping hole had been formed through the paper in the range. I was still filled with so much fury so I kept going again, again, and again like a mad man.
By the time I had deemed it enough for the day, my hand had a painful ache to it and beads of sweat decorated my forehead.
I walked out of the range, moving towards the front desk after placing the gun on a small table there. I was tired and my neck felt stiff. I had been up for a long time…since about four am having slept for only about three hours and I was just drained.
“Are you done sir?” Mara walked up to me handing me a water bottle. I took it and quickly gulped down the cool liquid feeling it soothe my throat. I nodded my head in appreciation at her and she simply nodded back moving back behind the counter. There were a few more people in the building and I could see them looking at me. Staring. Ah yes, I was still the CEO of my company. But I knew I had to get out of there fast before someone took a picture and rumors were started on the internet.
I help my suit jacket on my arm, left my shirt unbuttoned and moved out of the building. Putting my shades back one. I knew I would have to call the Rodriquez brothers sooner or later before they called me to make things better and even though I was dreading the call, it was something that I had to do. I felt grimy so I decided to go back to my apartment and take a bath before going out for my rescheduled meeting. Corine had emailed me the details of my meeting and she had set everything up. All that was left was just for me to attend the meeting.
I nodded at some of my guards and got into my car, heading back towards my apartment.
I wondered what Lily was doing. It was about midday so she should soon be on a lunch break. I wondered if she had eaten and as I drove back on high speed, I wondered how it would be like if she were mine. I was obsessed and I really needed a break.
