Adjusting my tie, I made my way to my grey Lamborghini and one of my bodyguards opened the door to the driver seat for me. My bodyguards would be following me in close range as I drove. Close but not too close.
It was 7:30 am which meant I had enough time to pass through my favorite Starbucks, which coincidentally was Lily’s as well and make a quick stop before I got to work with some few minutes to spare.
I barely got up to 3 hours of sleep last night after I had f****d and driven off my flavor of the night, and I couldn’t be late for work in my own firm. I believed in teaching by example. If you want the people under you to come early, you might as well come early yourself and if I was making this effort to be early, anyone who didn’t make the same effort, did not deserve to work for me. It was my simple work principle.
I really needed coffee to give me the boost I needed to start my day after the night I had. In 5 minutes, I was at the Starbucks and on my way in, I saw that Maria Rosa woman that Lily always hung around just leaving the premises with her kid.
Packing my lambo, I went into the shop and went straight to the counter to make my order. Well two orders. One coffee, black , bitter, no sugar for me and one cappuccino, extra creamy with exactly 5 sugars and a note on it that said ‘you can do this!’ for Lily. There was a line but of course I did not have time to waste standing on a line. Plus, I kinda owned the place. There were a few complaints when I cut the line but one icy look from me was enough to get them to shut up. I checked my emails on my phone as I waited for my order and I replied to them. My secretary Corine mostly handled my emails but some of them were highly private even for her and I answered them from my highly secure, private email.
“Mr Black. Coffee for mr black.” The guy at the counter called out and I rose from my seat in the little cubicle I had been sitting in and went to get the coffee which the guy had put in two holders. I took them and left without saying thank you. Why should i? I was paying him good money plus I did leave a 50 dollars tip. Checking the time on my Rolex, I realized I had been waiting for 5 minutes. Good thing the hospital was just on the other street.
Pulling up to the hospital, I set up the cappuccino at the nurses’ station. It was for Lily. I had been doing this ever since she started working here. I left her an anonymous cup of hot coffee with a small reassuring note after her long night or day depending on the shift she just had. I had been doing small anonymous things like this for the past years. If I wasn’t in town, one of my men always did it on my orders. It was what kept me grounded. She was what kept me grounded. I wasn’t a good guy but I knew I could be good for her.
“Good morning Sasha.” I greeted one of the nurses at the nurses’ station. She was an elderly woman in her 50s and I had met her many times. She was mostly the one who made sure the coffee got to Lily.
“Good morning sir. Are you here to drop off the usual?” She asked with a knowing smile. I just smiled back at her.
“Make sure she gets it. She must have had a long night.” I said and placed the cappuccino cup on the counter before her alongside a 50 dollar bill for Sasha’s troubles and turned to leave.
“Have a wonderful day sir” she called after me with a bright smile as she put the money in her purse.
“You too Sasha.”
Looking up from her desk, my phone rang and when I looked at the cover ID, I realized it was just Emile. Deciding to answer, I put the phone towards my ear and begun to leave the hospital.
As I was leaving, I caught sight of Lily coming towards the nurses’ station and my heart literally stopped. I had to will myself to get out of sight.she couldn’t know that I was here. She couldn’t know that I was the one always looking over her. You know most normal girls would see me as some sort of creep or something. Dashing swiftly behind a wall, I watched her as she interacted with Sasha. She looked tired. My poor beautiful Lily. I wish I could hug all her tiredness away. But I knew I couldn’t. it was not my place, though I wish it was.
Giving myself the grace of getting one last look at her, I saw her take a sip of her coffee and a smile etched itself on my face at the action, till I became jealous of the cup. It was getting attention from her sweet lips while I looked on. f*****g cup.
Turning around, I left the hospital with my phone to my ear.
“Talk to me Emile.” I said as I entered my car, connecting my phone to the car’s Bluetooth and drove off.
“It was bloody last night Xavier” he reported sounding out of breath. I gritted my teeth in anger as I swerved a bend in the road. The problems were becoming something else.
“Talk to me” I said.
“When we got to the docks, something didn’t feel right so I sent some of the men to scout the area first. When you called, the Rodriquez men were coming towards me so I hung up. Immediately, all of a sudden, unknown men starting firing at us from atop some shipping containers. Turns out we were walking straight into a trap. Some other third party was aware of the meeting and they were out for blood.”
“f**k!!” I cursed as my car’s tires screeched across the tar on the road.
“How many men did we lose?” I asked grimly.
“Three boss!” he replied.
Fuck!! Those had been valuable men. Whoever was behind this was going to pay.
“we have a problem boss” Emile said after a while, listening to my string of curses. Another problem? Great.
“What Emile?” I asked angrily.
“Two of the Rodriquez men were killed. You know how the Rodriquez brothers are. They might not listen to reason and instead see it as an act of war.”
Fuck he was right. The Rodriquez brothers were barbaric pigs who saw almost anything as a sign of war. they were always ready to cross off someone if they saw them as a threat. They were dangerous partners but they brought in good business and all that mattered to the other mafia leaders was that there was good business.
“I will call the brothers myself later and give them the news. Maybe even try to mediate and stop them from coming here and killing all our asses.” I was worse and more dangerous than them being mafia king and all, but the lives of my men and their families were on the line as well.
“Okay boss.” Emile answered back.
“Was the shipment received despite all the chaos?” I asked.
“Yes boss. When we had gotten over their advantage of surprise, we fired back and we fired back hard. We killed some of their men and the rest escaped before we could get to them. After we had scouted the grounds, we got the shipment and got to one of the safe houses.”
“Were you followed?”
“No boss. We made sure we weren’t. We used six different routes and changed cars twice to throw them off our scent.”
“Good. Good job.”
“What now? Xavier Black just gave a compliment? You growing old and soft boss?” Emile jested chuckling on the other line.
“Vete a la mierda pendejo (f**k you asshole)” I cursed in Spanish and his pained chuckle resounded on the other line.
I did speak Spanish. Italian, French and some Mandarin. Growing up in a wealthy household, my mother thought it would be posh if I learnt other languages. If only she knew I now used them in my illegal mafia business. I did use it in my multi million dollar company as well but not as much as I did in my illegal activities.
“Hey Emile, you okay?” I asked concerned when he sounded pained. He chuckled lowly on the other end but I found no humor in it.
“Those putas(bitches) put one in my shoulder before I was able to duck behind a car. The bullet just grazed my shoulder. Its nothing a little alcohol, a good f**k and a band aid cant fix” he brushed it off and I chuckled.
Classic Emile. Always downplaying emotions. Anyway, he sounded okay.
“Call the director of St Bernard’s. tell him I said he should send our usual doctor to treat the injured men. I will pass by the warehouse later during the day.”
“Okay boss. What you say goes. All right boss, I gotta go. These losers are trying to cheat” he said and loud men’s laughter echoed in the background. I shook my head and cut the call.
I was still in a foul mood when I pulled up to the company’s parking lot. I really had a lot on my plate. Well here’s to another f*****g day.
