Chapter 2: Mario's gifted daughter

1029 Words
SIENA Word has gone round that my father is being targeted for assassination. We've been in this city for two years and our business of import and export is doing good. We have trounced our competitors with our very nice offers and customer relations but that has earned us enmity in good measure. Now my father spends most of his time holed at home, for fear that once he gets out he may get killed. We have hired professional guards with weapons to guard him round the clock. I am the managing director of the firm, a position I assumed after the death of my mother and everyone reports to me. I in return report to my dad, Mario Renzo the CEO. Mum and dad were the founders of the company many years ago and her death from cervical cancer dealt everyone of us a major blow, resulting to our relocation to this town in order to run away from the memories. Immediately after moving here life started taking direction and I now have a boyfriend who still works in our company. Franco is a cool guy and even dad talks nicely about him. Currently he is a senior accountant and he is doing an excellent job. Ours was love at first sight. We met that day my dad was introducing me to the staff and when our eyes met, I felt a throb down my core and I knew I would ask him out if he wouldn't make the first move. Later that day, I took myself to his office and as we were discussing business, he asked me out for dinner since I hinted that I was new around here. I couldn't hide my happiness. I accepted his offer and that evening as we had our dinner, he asked me if I minded being his girlfriend. I couldn't bring myself to say yes but I told him I'd think about it. Well, a week later, I told him yes since I was lonely and the only boyfriend I knew was my childhood friend Tyson and the last time I heard about him, is when he had joined the army!  I couldn't continue clinging onto our memories since they're the only ones which kept me going and reminded me about him. However, Franco and I don't have any plans yet because it's still a little bit early...or so I presume. This Monday morning at my office I'm holding meetings with some clients and signing important deals when the phone rings. One of my security agents wants to see me and he says it's urgent. I put a lot of seriousness on security since we have enemies and I can't underestimate them. I finish with the meeting at hand and instruct my secretary to let in the security agent. Once Matteo is in my office I call in Emilia my personal assistant. “Please don't let in anyone in the next ten minutes.” I tell her, but in real sense I want the security agent to know that he only has ten minutes, or less, so he better be brief and to the point. “Ma'am," he starts, “we've been doing surveillance at Mr. Carter's premises for the last two weeks and today we saw something worth reporting on.” He pauses to read my face. I wave at him to go on. “Two of his guys who have been trailing us reported at the premises and only one was seen leaving, having changed clothes and carrying something heavy. We decided to follow him and minutes later he drove into a forest. We still followed discreetly and saw him dumping his cargo. When he left we went to investigate and discovered the dismembered body of his colleague. We think he was killed inside Carter's premises but we can't still figure out why.” He concludes and I assume he is done talking. “Well, we will find out soon. Just keep an eye on everything. I want to know when they make any move, and I want our side to be ready for any eventuality.” I tell the agent as our meeting comes to an end. He leaves soon afterwards and I am now more than convinced that we are dealing with a maniac. Who kills his security people? What for? Then it occurs to me that maybe he was killed for incompetence. Mafia bosses don't condone ineptitude. He may be shopping for someone better. We need to keep our eyes open now more than ever. Well, whatever they have in store, let them bring it on. I am more than prepared to protect my father and I have a team that can do what it takes. I can't wait for them to kill an innocent old man who's only crime is working hard to ensure his family never lacks! I take a little break to think about the new developments then twenty minutes later I resume my work. I will build this company to the highest peaks possible and I laugh at the fact that our opponents want to eliminate my father and not me, the brains at the helm. But let them continue thinking that I am a young girl who can't hurt a fly. It's the best position for everyone. But if push comes to shove I may be the most dangerous person around. I have weapons training and indeed in my handbag there is always a Beretta .9mm pistol, just in case someone tries something. Also, I am an expert in martial arts and I can easily take out a fully grown man using my bare hands. But only dad knows about these attributes, because he taught them to me. Franco will know in due course. These and many more are the things I think about as I wind up with my day's work.  If anyone thinks that my dad or myself are weak, then they're all in for a rude surprise. We can't take this just sitting down and refuse to act! Hell no! Franco is waiting to take me to dinner then drive me home where dad is waiting for my daily briefs. I better not keep them waiting!
